(en) <alter-ee> Meeting of Polish Anarchist Federation in Krakow

The half-yearly meeting of Polish Anarchist Federation was
held over the weekend in Krakow. Participants included delegates
from Poznan, Krakow, Lodz, Szczecin, Mielec, Lublin, Chelm, Warsaw/Praga,
Wroclaw, Gdansk/Tricity, Rzeszow, Slupsk and a newly admitted section from

The topics discussed included discussion about the choice of
boycotting or voting "no" on the EU accession referendum to be held
in february-march next year. The question is whether it's better to
aim for a non-valid referendum if less than 50% of people vote (in case
we assume that most voters will say "yes"), or if we think if it's possible
to have enough people vote "no". Similar discussions are being held
in circles of other opponents of the EU, which happen to be our
political enemies from the right. One of the ideas was to address them
to establish a common strategy for the referendum, but of course without
engaging in a common campaign (the reasons we oppose the EU are
rather different...)
Regardless of the results of the referendum the government
will sign the accession to EU, but it's a question how much hassle
it will be for them and how much obvious lies they will have to present
to the public. The more obvious their manipulation, the more possiblities
are open for a protest movement.

Other questions discussed were:
- a campaign to mark the anniversary of the outbreak of the 1st Chechen war
8 years ago on 11th december. Groups in Poznan, Warsaw and Krakow have
decided to participate,

- international east-european conference to be held in Warsaw on
27-30 june 2003. It is a proposal for discussion of projects such as
anarchist federation, actions of support for the future ABC-Russia,
coordination of various workers rights and feminist and anti-sexist
or actions against the EU. Particularily invited are people involved in the
Alter-EE mailing list. (more details available later on alter-ee).

- idea of creating a wide anti-war movement, which is made difficult by the
fact that in Poland the only organisations which have some
antiwar sentiments are such as conservatives
opposed to war in Chechnya, trotskyists or
Amnesty International. All of them have quite a limited understanding
of the question and are not very interested in protesting against war in

Other things planned are actions at the gates of the Ozarow
cable factory, where workers are on occupation strike for 190 days now,
blocking the liquidation of the assembly lines which was scheduled
as a result of a hostile takeover of the company.

There was also further discussion about whether th OKP
(Inter factory strike committee) uniting various factories threatened
with liquidation is a promising base for an antiglobalist movement,
or if it is just a springboard for ambitious leaders who want
to go into politics. So far, the Poznan section keeps its involvment
in OKP, while the other sections of FA remain skeptical.
