A report from "R3" (Roving Radical Reporters) :
Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Thursday February 24, 2000
SHED CAFE'S PREPPY PATRONS TOLD OF STREET PERSON KILLED BY RESTAURANT'S
BOUNCER AND COPS
In what appears to be a spontaneous political act denouncing police
brutality in Montreal, three individuals walked into Saint-Laurent
boulevard's Shed Cafe and denounced last September's brutal slaying of
Jean-Pierre Lizotte. The three addressed a busy lunchtime crowd of patrons,
first asking for their attention, then briefly announcing in French and
English that just in front of this restaurant, the bouncer and two cops
beat to death a poor man of small build, Jean-Pierre Lizotte.
Restaurant staff immediately went on the defensive, gesturing that Lizotte
had done obscene things beforehand, and suggested strongly that he deserved
to be killed. A few patrons were astonished, and came to the three persons
to ask about details. Many had heard of the killing, but didn't realize
that it involved this restaurant.
The September killing of Lizotte by the restaurant's bouncer and the
police, (none of whom have been identified, or criminally charged) has
attracted important media attention since the story accidentally surfaced
in December 1999. It became increasingly evident that there was an
attempted police cover-up.
It is not known if this denunciation was an isolated incident, or one in a
series of actions to expose corruption and the many killings of poor people
by the Montreal police.
*********
FACT: Of the 24 known killings by Mtl police since 1987, 40% of the cops
involved in the killings remain unidentified to the public.
