My name is Kate James, from Phoenix, Arizona. My friend, Amy and I
just completed the first of four trips, interviewing anarchist and
anti-authoritarian women (as self-defined) for a book and multimedia
history project. As there is not exactly an overwhelming amount of
*current* women's anarchist or anarcha-feminist material available
right now, I want to contribute some work to expand the movement's
knowledge about what women are thinking and doing. I also want to
meet and learn from anarchist women.
On our first trip, we spoke with people in the southwest and along
the west coast from August to October. The first trip was an amazing
voyage into the real world of how people are practicing anarchism.
Our first call for support (http://www.infoshop.org/inews/stories.php?story=03/07/31/5255119)
elicited lots of help that made the journey possible and fun. The
variety of anarchists that we interviewed re-affirmed my premise that
the anarchist movement is not one solely for young, white men. Amy and
I were continually amazed and inspired by the people and projects we saw,
both anarchist and not. A website should be up soon to detail some of this
and provide updates on the project.
My partner, Will and I will be moving to South Carolina in January and I
will be interviewing people along the way. Our tentative itinerary is as
follows. Please write back ASAP if we can talk or if you can put up Will
and I for a night in your town. We do dishes and won't eat all your food.
Dec. 8th -10th: Tucson, AZ
Dec. 15th - 17th: Flagstaff
Jan. 5th: Santa Fe, NM
Jan. 6th: Portales, NM
Jan. 7th - 8th: Dallas, TX
Jan. 9th - 10th: Austin, TX
Jan. 11th - Spring, TX
Jan. 12th - 13th: Houston, TX
Jan. 14th - 16th: New Orleans, LI
Jan. 16th - 18th: Biloxi, MS
Jan. 18th - 19th: Mobile, MS
Jan. 24th - 25th: DC (NCOR - http://www.organizedresistance.org)
As soon as time and funds allow, I will be traveling further in the South,
the East Coast and the mid-west to conduct even more interviews.
A little about myself, for those who are interested: Currently, I'm
involved in Phoenix Copwatch (http://www.phoenixcopwatch.org) as a member
and trainer, I'm a co-founder of the FOCUS movie night (http://www.phxarts.org/focus)
and am working hard on this project. I was a member of the Phoenix Anarchist
Coalition (http://www.phoenixanarchist.org) for 3 years and did lots of organizing
for the Southwest Anarchist Network Conference, held in April of 2003. I've been a
semi-regular contributor to Arizona Indymedia (http://www.arizona.indymedia.org)
and have helped out the folks from The Autonomous Media Center (www.autonomousmedia.net),
See Sharp Press (http://www.seesharppress.com) and Local to Global Justice
(http://www.localtoglobaljustice.org). You can write any of these groups to do
background checks and please feel free to do so - trust is essential to this project.
Hope to hear from ya'll soon, ~ Kate James
