(en) Canada, Collectif Emma Goldman - Chicoutimi: 40 meals distributed at the self-managed cooking pot "Solidarity will never be confined" (fr, it, pt)[machine translation]

Date Fri, 10 Jul 2020 09:22:57 +0300

Saguenay, July 5 // Forty meals were distributed today in downtown Chicoutimi on the occasion of the Self-Managed Cooking Pot organized by the Collectif anarchiste Emma Goldman. The theme of the event was "solidarity will never be confined" to underline the essential role of mutual aid networks in this difficult context. Cold packaged submarines were offered respecting the physical distance and the people on the spot were able to take or give "by the heap"[1]in the free market. Of course, discussions and exchanges of views were more than anything else at the heart of the event. ---- The forgotten and forgotten of the pandemic were the less fortunate and marginalized. These people were already living in difficult situations with the gentrification of the city center. The rising cost of rent, harassment and repression by the police and the food desert, along with the crumbling of the social safety net and austerity policies, were already causing their share of misery in the neighborhood. Today, in the shadows of the shops on rue Racine who sing the deconfinement in the middle of the street there are many people who are struggling and who have not received any additional help to cope with all these hassles.

Tenants once again told us about the exorbitant price charged by their owner (example $ 530 / month for a very small 1 and a half) and repairs that were delayed for weeks. For a very large part of the less fortunate, rent takes up the largest share of their income. We saw with the rooming house at 734 rue Racine last year that the city tolerates slum owners to continue their unscrupulous exploitation, even after a fire with considerable damage (and one death in this case). The pandemic has made it more difficult for people to pay and has given new apologies to landlords who neglect their tenants' homes. However, only companies received help.

La Marmite autogéré is an autonomous and libertarian response to the needs of the neighborhood. We do not receive any funding. We are workers and unemployed workers in the neighborhood who want to encourage mutual assistance by offering everyone, without distinction, a free nutritious meal for all appetites. We are critical of the leadership of the community movement and its donors (state or private) through institutionalization and practices akin to Christian charity. Collective grassroots mobilizations and popular education are essential to regain dignity, as well as a voice in this system. Through the Self-Managed Cooking Pot, we want to encourage the development of mutual aid networks and the multiplication of autonomous solidarity initiatives.
