(en) Poland, zsp: We fight for our health: We must cure the disease of misery and precarization [machine translation]

Date Mon, 23 Mar 2020 08:32:56 +0200

The coronavirus pandemic has increased public awareness of the importance of our health and the threat of infection. The Polish Syndicalists' Union wishes a lot of health to all employees who still do important work for us - including health care workers, but also other, underestimated categories of employees such as cashiers in the supermarket, agricultural workers, bakers, food industry employees, food delivery couriers, chefs, public transport drivers, taxi drivers, etc. ... We know that without you there is no question of the normal functioning of city life. ---- However, ZSP would like to draw attention to the fact that we have been passively accepting for years that many of these employees work in very precarious conditions - often without permanent employment contracts, with very low salaries. For years, employees (and in general mainly employees) of health services such as nurses, paramedics or physicians have been fighting for better working conditions. We believe that the majority of society agrees that they have the right to decent working conditions and good pay for their hard work. However, we are not doing enough to show the authorities that we are demanding increased spending on healthcare. And our authorities prefer to talk about prosperity and health, hiding the tragic situation we are really dealing with. In fact, in Poland people die from the side effects of misery - i.e. lack of proper nutrition, living in conditions harmful to health. We are faced with a situation where pensioners have to choose between buying medicines and paying rent, with the uncertain situation of millions of employees who work over-the-top without paid leave and sick leave.

For years, the ZSP reminds that many people are forced to work despite their illness on a daily basis, because the boss orders them to do so. They do not have sick leave and are always only the value of a few weeks of work separating them from homelessness and hunger. Of course, among those who often work despite illness, there are also gastronomy employees, which causes very dangerous conditions for them and for people visiting restaurants. Customers sometimes pay a lot for food, but restaurant owners often don't care about their working conditions to the extent that they can afford.

In the current situation, we know that many employees simply cannot afford to lose 2 or more weeks of work. They have to pay rent, pay back loans and cover many other expenses. We urge the government to finally adopt laws ending the pathology of junk contracts and precarious working conditions - all the more so because many employees working on commission or a specific work contract should actually work on employment contracts. A special act is needed on compensation for employees - victims of temporary unemployment (multiple payments for persons on commission contracts and other civil-law contracts who have lost their income through forced stops at work and to ensure the respect of the rights of persons who end their employment contracts during the quarantine period) at least the minimum salary, and enabling documents to be forwarded to employment offices for benefits). We call on everyone to support employees who have now decided to claim their rights. Write to the companies you know that they employ on junk contracts. We encourage employees to familiarize themselves with their rights and to fight for recognition of their status as employees employed under an employment contract.

ZSP will support employees who want to actively fight for their rights. Join us and show that you do not agree to the continuation of the pathology of junk employment!
