(en) France, Union Communiste Libertaire UCL - press release - Covid-19 in education: cacophony and endangerment (fr, it, pt)[machine translation]

Date Sun, 22 Mar 2020 08:53:22 +0200

A minister who says in the morning that the schools will "never" close ... and a President of the Republic who announces the opposite the same evening. This is what happened on March 12. ---- And that says a lot about the degree of preparation of the administrative authorities of National Education, with what it means in terms of endangerment ! ---- Authoritarian Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer had decided to do so: the schools would not close. ---- Macron announced Thursday the opposite for Monday, March 16. For three days, orders and counter-orders followed one another, leaving the staff in complete uncertainty until the last moment. ---- As of Monday, some still did not know whether they should go to their establishments. Again on Monday, zealous school leaders put pressure on the staff, teachers, maintenance, reception, school life so that they were "at their post" in the morning, in defiance of the danger that now represents all contact in an enclosed space.

Several trade union organizations reacted, strongly, to impose that the staff are not in danger, and called them if necessary to assert their right of withdrawal for this.

The only certainty concerned students who should not go to their schools and establishments.

With the exception of the children of health care workers, who are on the front line facing the epidemic, and who it is logical and necessary to take care of with all the necessary protective measures for students and staff in charge of this welcome.

Any requisition of personnel that is done without ensuring security conditions would endanger both the personnel as well as the students and their parents !

There is also a serious uncertainty according to the establishments and the academies, and to the goodwill of the heads of establishments, on what must the students of vocational lycées (mainly from the lower classes) called to join their places of internship in a company.

While one of the reasons - justified - for closing schools is the risk that the students are, as carriers, healthy carriers of contagion despite themselves and them, it is amazing to see that in the frenzy of adapting to the "Corporate world" one can imagine that. We call on the staff of vocational lycées to demand that students, in work-study programs or in initial training, be immediately exempt from their periods of presence in a company and stay at home.

More generally, for the Libertarian Communist Union, staff as well as students must be sheltered, stay at home and at home and organize themselves as best as possible for the transmission of lessons and / or reading advice and of activities, without hierarchical pressure of any kind.

With regard to home lessons, since access to computers is not guaranteed to everyone, no one should be penalized for inability to follow the courses. Otherwise, it would be children of the working classes who would bear the brunt of the epidemic.

All physical meetings must be canceled, for all categories of personnel. All class advice, all exams must be canceled altogether: it is obvious that in such an exceptional situation nothing can be foreseen and that the "evaluation imperative" is completely minor. We are already calling for a "white year" and guaranteed automatic transition to the next year of training for all.

The top priority is the health situation and the mutual help that we can provide.

We invite staff to coordinate collectively to obtain the security guarantees that the directorates and the department should have as a priority.

Libertarian Communist Union, March 18, 2020
