(en) Collettivo Anarchico Libertario - Livorno: In memory of Filippo Filippetti - Livorno anarchist, anti-fascist, killed by the fascists (it) [machine translation]
Mon, 22 Jul 2019 09:44:24 +0300
Friday 2 August 2019 7 pm Commemoration at the tombstone Via Provinciale Pisana 354,
Livorno (going towards Via Firenze, to the former school opposite the ARCI "Tamberi" club)
---- Filippo Filipetti, a young anarchist, was killed by the fascists on 2 August 1922
while he opposed, together with other anti-fascists, a punitive expedition against
Livorno. ---- On 2 August 1922 a group of young anti-fascists, including some anarchists,
engaged in an armed clash near Pontarcione with the fascist trucks. Filippo Filippetti, a
member of the Arditi del Popolo, trade unionist of USI for the construction sector, dies
in the shooting. ---- In the summer of 1922 the last cards are played to stop the
anti-proletarian reaction: the country is crossed by a crescendo of aggressions carried
out by the fascists against the workers' movement organizations and individual militants;
there are dozens of deaths among the anti-fascists.
For months, the Italian Anarchist Union and the newspaper "Umanità Nova" have been
fighting in support of the Arditi del Popolo movement, to build a united proletarian front
that organizes the defense.
On the initiative of the Ferrovieri Italiano Syndicate, the Labor Alliance is formed, in
which all the trade unions participate, with the support of the Anarchist Union, the
Republican Party, the Communist Party and the Socialist Party.
The Labor Alliance calls for an all-out general strike to stop fascist violence from
midnight on 31 July.
The fascists financed by agrarians and industrialists, armed by the Carabinieri and the
Army, protected by the monarchy and the church, attack the workers' strongholds.
In many cities, including Piombino, Ancona, Parma, Civitavecchia, Bari, the fascists are
repulsed also thanks to the action of the Arditi del Popolo. As the workers' resistance
grows, CGL and PSI, hoping for yet another compromise, will withdraw from the struggle,
paving the way for armed retaliation by the Government.
Livorno is one of the centers of the clash. Between 1 and 2 August 1922 fascist teams from
all over Tuscany launched the hunt for Livorno antifascists, breaking into the popular
neighborhoods that resisted the invasion.
Many were the murdered in those days. Popolani, communist militants, anarchists,
republicans and socialists, including Luigi Gemignani, Gilberto Catarsi, Pietro Gigli,
Pilade Gigli, Oreste Romanacci, Bruno Giacomini and Genoveffa Pierozzi.
In the clashes on the outskirts the young anarchist Filippo Filippetti is killed.
Anarchists invite all anti-fascists to participate in the commemoration.
