(en) France, Alternative Libertaire AL #291 - Education: The " red pens " are still looking for (fr, it, pt)[machine translation]

Date Thu, 7 Feb 2019 08:49:32 +0200

Yellow jackets have been emulated in education: since the end of December, groups of " red pens " are multiplying on social networks. School teachers and secondary school teachers find themselves behind their screens or in real life to exchange ideas, propose actions and ask questions. Rash without a future or remobilization ? ---- After the constitution of a first national group of red pens, which now brings together nearly 70,000 people, other groups have been created, academy by academy. The demands are simple: revalorization of the profession and wages, improvement of working conditions and learning. Nothing new then. The novelty is that these groups bring together many people who have never had any union activity before. ---- Faced with this, different reactions are possible: the grumpy and cranky will consider that the red pens reinvent the hot water, that the proposed modes of action are too shy (write a petition) or too unrealistic (block the tray), that some debates have already been settled by trade unions for a long time ...

Limits to point
In other words, if we want to advance the unionization rate in the National Education, we need a slightly more constructive response, which is to get colleagues where they are. Yes, education staff are, on average, less informed and have a milder culture than experienced trade unionists. It is not a surprise. But rather than picking up on colleagues who are timidly starting to mobilize, it would be more relevant for activists to get involved in the debate, answer questions, put ideas into perspective by leaning on the memory of struggles. The proposals are sometimes not innovative (" we must mobilize parents "), ideas are sometimes frankly questionable (" strike is useless ") and the modes of action sometimes lend to smile (" organize corrections of collective copies ") but the main thing is to discuss and propose to meet to discuss again.

Still, there are several blind spots, especially regarding the categories of personnel involved in the red pen groups. The projector is indeed focused on teachers, while the administrative staff or workers, and precarious as a whole are not at all taken into account.

Another limit to point out: if one must be careful not to sink into the raillery in the face of all that is new, one must however remain vigilant.es face speeches that claim to make a clean sweep of all that exists. The challenge is rather that the movement of red pens and union mobilization meet and come together. It's up to us to work on it.
