(en) polemica cubana: ABRA: A NEW EFFORT FOR SELF-EMANCIPATION IN CUBA (ca, fr, pt) [machine translation]

Date Tue, 15 May 2018 09:36:02 +0300

No crowded room, no audio or microphone, no promotions in social networks or email lists. They arrived as they wished and as they could, and that was enough. ---- More than thirty people were present on May 5, 2018 in Lawton, to found together ABRA Social Center and Libertarian Library. ---- After almost three years of international campaign to raise the necessary funds, without resorting to governments, political parties or NGOs (let alone the institutions of the Cuban State), we managed to realize a dream that emerged in 2015. ---- We come from previous experiences of the Haydeé Santamaría Chair, the Critical Observatory Network and the Forest Ranger, who have demonstrated the urgency of having a fixed physical room so that the work can be maintained over time.

Some of us have seen in Europe and America left-wing collectives, trade unionists, anarchists, socialists, alterglobalists, who have their own spaces. Some occupy, others praise, and it is there that they express their creativity, channel their belligerent energies to try to transform a world more and more xenophobic, racist, consumerist, unfair and exploitative.

Our own struggles may be those or others, but it is clear that nothing can replace the direct contact, the transparent look of people who want to make things happen together. Especially in Cuba, where state control over the media is so tight, and where the Internet is still so expensive and slow.

This was understood by the people who contributed to our idea coming to life, and to each of them, I express my deep gratitude and that of my companions in the libertarian Atelier Alfredo López and the Observatory Cuban criticism.

We know they do not have a lot of money. We know that many are workers or students, and that every euro paid is a sacrifice for them.

That is why we can only begin this new stage with great humility and commitment to ourselves to open our Center to anyone who knocks on a dream, an idea of autonomy. and collective work, and thus give a new meaning to our life.

That's why, in addition to sharing our own story with those who visited us this weekend, we also gave them the space to share their own projects, or offer us their art.

Thus, we took the opportunity to present old friendly projects such as the playful community education and leisure project "El Trencito", the anti-racism newsletter "From the cheese maker" or the "Kaweiro" group, so that they appear before new listeners in the presence of their coordinators Yadira Rubio, Tato Quiñones and Carlos Díaz y Meibol.

We enjoyed the art of trova , the Cuban song presented by the students of the University of Havana and some informal troubadours, as well as some written poems.

We learned about other artistic experiences such as those of our company Ernesto, who, in addition to selflessly creating the murals that welcome visitors to our center, shared a new series of beautiful photographs under the title ABRA.

The promoters of the Loyola Center told us about the new "Forum Loyola" discussion spaces that are currently functioning; we also learned the details of Jorge Mata's visual arts project "You and I in addition to me", as well as the upcoming "Improducibles Factory" of the Scenic Laboratory of Social Experimentation, presented by Yohayna Hernández.

In short, from the first step, we tried to live up to our name and "we opened" the door to the other that comes without space to try to create something emancipator and beautiful.

What kind of things? Well, you can still get inspired by different things, including something as common as a dictionary:

ABRA:

1. Bay not very big (handle)

2. Open space between the mountains (gorge)

3. Opening produced in the field by an earthquake (crack)

4. Space between two rows of vats in a cellar

5. Open and wide field located between the woods or path open through the weeds.

6. Window or door leaf

7. Distance between the masts of the rigging.
