(en) France, Alternative Libertaire - international, Iraq: the dirty work of the peshmergas against the Kurdish left by AL 92, AL Montreuil (fr, it, pt) [machine translation]

Date Sat, 18 Mar 2017 09:08:50 +0200

Erdogan has a long arm, and everything is good to strangle Kurdistan. After his army invaded northern Syria, his ally Massoud Barzani put pressure on the Sinjar, hitherto defended by militias of the Kurdish left. ---- March 3, 500 peshmerga troops of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) attacked the town of Khanasor in the highly symbolic region of Sinjar, Iraq[1]. Several deaths and injuries were reported. The attack has been postponed, but vigilance remains in place. ---- Sinjar is home to the Yezidis, a religious minority considered "satanic" by the jihadists of Daech. In the summer of 2014, the peshmerga who ruled the region had fled before Daech's advance, abandoning the Yezidi populations to the fate promised them by the jihadists: extermination for men, slavery for women. The Yezidi population owed its salvation only to the spectacular counter-offensive carried out by the PKK and YPG-YPJ fighters, who had stopped Daech and secured Mount Sinjar.

Thereafter, the Kurdish left encouraged the self-organization of the Yezidis, which had their own self-defense units, armed and trained by the PKK: YBS (men and women) and YJS (women).

It is the YBS who repelled the attack of the peshmerga, and captured several.

Red enclaves in Iraq

Sinjar, with Maxmur [2]or the Qandil Mountains, is one of the strongholds of the Kurdish left in Iraq, thwarting the powers in place in Baghdad, Ankara and Erbil, the capital of the GRK where Massoud Barzani, A potentate in the orbit of Erdogan. In January, a rapprochement between the Turkish and Iraqi presidents paved the way for this attempt to take over the Sinjar[3].

Today we see the result.

Sad show that these peshmergas, acclaimed last year in a film of BHL[4], which shoot their rivals of the left, whereas a few tens of kilometers away, Daech continues its exactions.

Turkish menace on Manbij

The Sinjar attack broke out as the Turkish army and its Islamist supplants of the Free Syrian Army (ASL) seized the city of Al-Bab on February 27 after several months of fighting against Daech. Now, Erdogan's troops are targeting the city of Manbij, which is held by the Syrian Democratic Forces (FDS), an Arab-Kurdish coalition. To counter this threat, the FDS preferred to back several kilometers, leaving the troops of Bashar el Assad slipping between them and the Turkish troops. Russians and Americans endorsed this sleight of hand to limit the clashes.

And the fact is there. Al-Bab, Manbij, Sinjar: in several places, the Turkish state and its allies demonstrate that Daech is for them only a secondary adversary. Their primary objective is to eradicate the Kurdish left and strangle the democratic and anti-colonial symbol that represents the Rojava / Democratic Federation of Northern Syria[5].
