(en) Czech, afed: Feminism znamená solidaritu - Report from the Prague event to mark International Women's Day
Sat, 18 Mar 2017 09:08:43 +0200
As part of International Women's Day this year organized a series of anti-capitalist and
feminist collectives event called Stop: Den female solidarity . The name refers to an
international strike associated with industrial action that the newly awakened women's
movement, among others, alarmed by selecting misogynního billionaire Donald Trump to the
American presidency, decided to organize. ---- Clearly, concisely, egalitarian ----
Organizers stops, specifically collectives FEM, parents at Charles University, NemrAFky,
Transparent Initiative No Racism!, an informal group of women on March 8, as the home
fourth wave, the Christian-feminist groups and RFK association Konsent, people convened on
Wednesday, March 8 Peace Square in Prague. There is an unusually timely gathered about a
hundred people around the booths of individual organizations offering refreshments, a
smaller distro and freeshop. Besides feminists arrived several television crews and three
plainclothes policemen, as always graceful, striking his nonchalance. Particularly one
with a beard enjoyed in becoming a new photographic equipment and shaking the camera lens
with a cheerful enthusiasm.
Rally started short listing of the organizing teams and bringing international context
stop. The subsequent speech recalled the development of feminist theory and practice in
recent decades and some of the current topics of the feminist movement - casualization of
work, unequal distribution of housework, sad situation underprivileged seniors, poor
awareness of sexualised and domestic violence and the ever present culture of sexism and
toxic masculinity, which negatively influences and traumatized and otherwise privileged
men. "Because of it, we can not celebrate," said the speaker, why we are in the streets.
There was also a warning to the wider context of the feminist struggle - "Feminism means
for us solidarity," came from the anti-capitalist perspective.
Theatre Anny Letenské
After the speeches are presented in a few sentences of the organizing groups, which
received enthusiastic applause. One of the organizers, an informal group Women on March 8,
followed by about a ten-minute break called on those present to attend a performance at
the nearby Vinohrady Theatre.
There is present in a good mood and moved once gathered before entering the theater, the
speaker highlighted the historical context on women as seamstresses in New York strikes of
1908 and that otherwise they are feminists in history, remembered only minimally.
Therefore, women on March 8 decided Vinohrady Theater manifest renamed Theatre Anny
Letenské according to a major actress First Republic, which was the theater of his time is
crucial. Personality Letna recalled also because of the currently discussed television
series La Bohème, which female celebrities of the time Letna by March 8 Women usually
portrays as passive and long-suffering victim of the times.
In the historical context, therefore, we should not forget the women who in the past
against the historical forces actively and courageously fought - whether in arms or
through solidarity and resistance through active compassion.
And what else?
After we had before the newly renamed Theatre Anny Letenské left the picket with a new
name and a bouquet, we returned to the square. Some were engrossed in discussions more
slowly uttering away. It has been necessary to gather strength before afrerparty evening
at the Clinic, where he not only celebrated but also heatedly debated.
Overall, we assess as positive that we as feminists could take International Women's Day
back and fill it with new themes and context of the international fight against sexism and
patriarchal organization of society. Hopefully, next time will succeed to the streets to
mobilize large numbers of people, and it also manages to remember that we feminism and
efforts to eliminate oppression based on gender should accentuate all year round and in
our daily lives, not only from time to time in the demonstrations.
