(en) Poland, Warsawa: Protests at Cafe to Defend Precarious Workers' Rights

Date Mon, 23 Aug 2010 23:55:53 +0300

The Warsaw section of ZSP has started daily pickets at Azteca Bar. The pickets will be held this week during lunch and dinner time, when the cafe usually has the most traffic. This decision was made after the first two pickets and no response from the boss to our demands. The conflict involves illegal deductions made from the pay of our comrade, forcing people to take contracts which obliges them to pay an astromonimical amount for 'training" should they not work long enough, unpaid trial periods, attempts to make people work illegally, etc. etc. ---- Unfortunately, we know that many places in the food service industry impose illegal conditions and shit work on their employees. Already starting last year, people working in such places started contacting us about their problems, in particular about unpaid trial periods, forced, unpaid overtime and illegal deductions taken from their pay.

We have already produced a booklet about trial periods and now we will
make one about deductions from salaries, to help people understand
their rights and what they can do if their bosses don't pay them.
These actions at Azteca Bar hopefully will also be part of a larger
awareness campaign for workers in this industry.

At today's first picket, the boss was extremely agressive, threatening
the leafletters with all sorts of repression, in particular claiming
that the police will press criminal charges against us. Somehow he
doesn't seem to believe that there is a right to protest in Poland and
he keeps calling the police and city guards. This just brings more
attention to the pickets and more sympathy from the neighbours, many
of whom have shown their support. The boss has now asked for an
"official letter" with our demands.
