(en) Canada, Collectif Emma Goldman - Hi Gilbert! - Tribute to a comrade of the Saguenay social left (ca, de, it, fr, pt)[machine translation]

Date Tue, 23 Feb 2021 08:23:56 +0200

On February 15, Gilbert Talbot passed away suddenly. I wish to extend my sincere condolences to Carmen and all of Gilbert's family, as well as all of her relatives, friends and comrades. Gilbert Talbot has been a comrade in the struggle for me over the past fifteen years and it is for this reason that I wish to pay tribute to him today. ---- It was around 2006 that I first met Gilbert during an action by Bleuets pour la Paix aimed at disturbing a Conservative Party cocktail in Jonquière. I had just become politicized following the 2005 student strike. The formation of the War to War antimilitarist network in Quebec City was a great inspiration to me and I was eager to take action of disobedience. We entered the hotel to spoil the haughty atmosphere until the employees pushed us outside. Big man, Gilbert stood straight across, solid and calm. I couldn't tell yet that he had seen many more.

Over the following years, I often saw Gilbert at demonstrations, in actions or in rallies. Firmly rooted in the left, Gilbert was someone with whom one could easily talk about Marxism, political ideas and social struggles. He participated in the Rassemblement pour la alternative politique and in Québec solidaire, but he was not afraid to participate in more radical demonstrations, even those of the Anarchist Emma Goldman Collective (and it was not to sell membership cards there. ). Gilbert was a true militant of the social left and did not hesitate to denounce capitalism quite fiercely. In 2012, during Student Spring, during disturbing actions in Chicoutimi, the police officers of the City of Saguenay were literally on the heels of the demonstrators in tanks since they refused to give their itinerary or to comply with the instructions of the authorities - a demonstrator had moreover had his foot crushed. Gilbert was shocked, once, on the rue Bégin and had given a big punch on one of the police tanks! Another memory of a demonstration: in March 2017, during an anti-racist counter-demonstration in Chicoutimi, when the far-right groups La Meute and Storm Alliance had come to demonstrate on Racine Street, Gilbert stood upright, banner in hand, in front of a few members of the new riot unit, batons in hand, and the racists offended at being blocked in the way. His calm contrasted once again with the excited atmosphere.

Over these years, I have had several good discussions and talks with Gilbert. It was there that he told me about his years of communist activism in the 1970s, notably within the regional cell of the Communist League (Marxist-Leninist) of Canada, later become the Communist Workers Party. He had known quite agitated demonstrations in these years when the regional climate was quasi-insurrectionary. He retained from these experiences several contributions to the combativeness of regional social movements and to the development of popular initiatives (such as popular day care centers), while severely criticizing the League for sectarian enlistment and infiltration of community organizations. He was disappointed with several positions taken by the League,

Despite this experience, Gilbert never stopped getting involved in the struggles until his last days. In the face of capitalist chaos, he knew how to remain upright, always solid as a rock. The hour of rest has arrived for you comrade, but know that you will remain an inspiration for a long time for many activists who will have crossed your path.

Hi Gilbert!
