(en) Britain, London, Media, Durham Miners Joining Anarchists In Trafalgar Square For Margaret Thatcher Death Party

Date Sun, 14 Apr 2013 08:26:34 +0300

Members of Durham Miners' Association have travelled to London to take part in a mass party in Trafalgar Square, organised by anarchist groups to celebrate the death of Margaret Thatcher. ---- The event is being staged by the Class War group, with support from The All London Anarchist Revolutionary Mob (ALARM). ---- Organisers posted a description of the event online, saying: "On the first Saturday after Margaret Thatcher dies, Class War is calling a mass party to start at 6pm, in Trafalgar Square, scene of the most famous riot against her policies! ---- "Whether or not you want to reminisce about the good old days of rioting against the poll tax, to toast old friends who fought Thatcherism, or just want to celebrate the death of the most reviled woman in Britain, we hope to see you there.

"Bring your champagne, fireworks, party clothes and yourselves!

"Promotional posters and stickers for this event will be available from London Class War."

The Metropolitan Police is expected to have a large-scale presence at the event, as the force gears up for a vast, intelligence-led operation to contain disorder on the day of Baroness Thatcher's funeral, April 17.

Margaret Thatcher: her death prompted both mourning and celebration

In an obituary of Margaret Thatcher on their website, Durham Miners' Association say: "When we say we celebrate her death, we are reflecting the deep and lasting bitterness of our mining communities – and felt across the entire working class – at the ravages of her brutal policies which destroyed the lives and prospects of so many people.
"Even today, we see the legacy of her policies in the continued vandalism of the Tory-Lib-Dem coalition, this time aimed at dismantling the Welfare State."

The Durham Miners' Association is also planning an all-day celebration at Easington Colliery Club on the day of Baroness Thatcher's funeral, with refreshments, food and entertainment laid on for former miners and their families, women’s support groups and supporters.
