(en) Canada, Common Cause Express* no. 23 - Global fight against austerity (fr) [machine translation]

Bill C-38 adopted by the Harper government in March last part of a long list of austerity
measures that overcome several governments trying to make us swallow. ---- These measures
would aim to repay the debt incurred during the recent economic crisis to save large
companies and banks from bankruptcy. Obviously, nothing is wrong, or why we prevent
mounting taxes on the rich society and the companies we saved? ---- The successive
governments, whether at the federal, provincial or municipal levels are only instrument
for a class of more or less large bourgeois for whom poor (workers, women workers, the
unemployed, unemployed etc.). serve only to work and consume the products on which they
make money. It is therefore not surprising that when it comes to cutting the budget are
social programs and measures to help the working class that suffer first. Do not think
they will cut a day in profits of entrepreneurs ...
Thus, by adopting this Bill C-38, the Conservatives have not only slashed unemployment
insurance, and they have also increased the retirement age from 65 to 67 years in the
country in addition to s' address pay equity in the federal contracts. As might be
expected, the government invoked the need to create favorable conditions for economic
prosperity in the country. In short, we cut that is given to the poor to enrich the rich ...
We inspire the student movement
The measures announced by the Harper Conservatives are not unlike other austerity measures
had tried to implement the government, provincial this time, Jean Charest in Quebec. We
remember, of course, rising tuition fees, but also the health and tax rate increase
hydroelectricity that the State wanted us to swallow. At least one of these measures has
been successfully fought: rising tuition. It is therefore important to analyze what were
the key to the success of the student struggle Spring 2012: direct democracy, solidarity
and struggle unionism.
Firstly, try to democratize our maximum control organizations in this case, groups of
unemployed people. The first priority is to reappropriate them by bringing proposals of
shares or positions policies, by recruiting new adherents and new adherent victims of
these policies, and leaving power to the base, and non not to employees-es or the boards
of directors who too often control everything that is done in community groups. This is
what direct democracy.
It is then important to use the type of engagement that allowed students to win: fight
unionism. Obviously, it is rather problematic to strike when the provider is unemployment
insurance, however, it is quite possible to use the rest of the range of actions used by
the student movement: blocking, occupation, and even sabotage. Ago already too long that
the Conservatives govern without being disturbed-es. Occupy Ministers' offices, block
companies under federal jurisdiction (where the money is: banks, ports). Knocking at the
heart of the economy and are not afraid of diversity of tactics.
Must also aim the greater solidarity possible between the different struggle. This is what
the student movement has also succeeded in allying with environmental struggles, movement
and community groups of unionized workers in the education system. We must do the same in
this fight. Were we to progressive groups that fight against Bill C-38 and they are
numerous environmental groups, women's groups, labor groups, aid groups to immigrants
etc.. Also seek to ensure that the public is aware of the issues raised by this law by
informing and mobilizing the widely. After all, it is the whole of the working class which
is attacked by these measures.
Our strength: the number
As left-es on behalf of the company, we have nothing other than strength in numbers to
oppose the austerity policies dictated by the Canadian government and supported by the
richest countries. It may seem cliché, but for us, "unity is strength." It is by uniting
as horizontally that is, so that as many people know the ins and outs of our struggle,
being aggressive and combative as well as being integral that we can overcome.
