Editorial The challenge of layoffs
There is no doubt that the wave of layoffs that swept into France for a few weeks - the
most spectacular being that on the website of PSA Aulnay - have been delayed until after
the presidential election in an unsuccessful attempt to Sarkozy to save the day. But it
must not be forgotten that this is, more fundamentally, the foreseeable consequences of
the recession, more precisely even the main cause of it, namely wage austerity raging
across Europe. So it is not surprising that these redundancies are concentrated in the
branches producing consumer durables, such as automotive and construction.
Faced with these layoffs, which probably announce more in the coming months, the workers
directly involved and their unions can not simply organize purely defensive struggles, to
save as many jobs as possible or to obtain the best compensation in the context of
so-called "social plans". Still less should they applaud, as some of these organizations
have begun to do, projects to boost industrial production, advanced or supported by a
government that has made one of his hobby horses, do not undermine the current standards
of production and consumption. What rhymes, for example, start building electric cars when
it comes to not only transform all existing modes of travel but also, more fundamentally,
the production of social space in order to avoid displacement constrained by the
dispersion of the various economic and social activities or aberration that is the
substitution flow of heavy vehicles on roads and highways stocks of companies?
Because, if workers do not want to suffer the rule of capital, which makes them a simple
adjustment variable subject to the fluctuations of the order book, they must begin to (re)
appropriate issues to the purpose of the use of the productive forces of society to ask
what should be produced and how it should be produced and fight to impose the purposes and
methods of production in accordance with social needs and environmental constraints. And
this requirement applies not only to private sector employees as well but for those
employed in the public sector: the face of austerity policies that strike cuts public
services of education and health, this is similar to a collective effort of imagination
they are invited. Without being able to meet this challenge, condemn the workers to waive
any capacity for social transformation.
