Every year on October 12th, the Swedish syndicalist union SAC announces the winner of the
Prize for Civil Courage, awarded to workers who acted in the spirit of the SAC member
Björn Söderberg, murdered by nazis on the same date in 1999. This years recipient, Warrent
Lorena Estra Lara, helped her union in exposing the slave-like conditions workers have had
to suffer at the hands of mafia-controlled temp agencies at several Stockholm hotels and
restaurants. ---- The winner of the prize in honour of the memory of Björn Söderberg was
announced during the http://arbetaren.se/artiklar/sac-laddar-for-framtidskongress/]30th
congress of the SAC, taking place in the city of Gävle - birthplace of Joe Hill. Warrent
Lorena Estrada, a member of the Stockholm-based Västerort local branch of SAC received the
prize because of her actions in june 2012, when she exposed the conditions which about 20
worker had to suffer at the hands of mafia-controlled staffing companies offering services
to Stockholm hotels and
restaurants.
She was quoted as being ”a worthy heir of the spirit of
Björn Söderberg, showing courage and and sticking to her beliefs as
she stood up against the oppression at her workplace” in the
explanatory statement. ”This means that I no longer have any fear, I
can keep going on with the struggle. I don't know what to say. It
means a lot. It's a recognition of everything I had to go through, my
struggle and the courage I had to muster” says Warrent Lorena Estrada
Lara.
During the weekend, the SAC congress made some changes to the
procedures relating to the prize. From now on, the SAC executive
committee appoint a committee dedicated to the prize, and in the
future the prize will be presented in the city of the recipient. The
prize will be awarded on October 12th, the same date that Björn
Söderberg was shot and killed outside of his apartment in 1999.
