(en) Britain, The third national conference of Liberty and Solidarity October 21st, 2009 By George Stapleton

Date Wed, 04 Nov 2009 23:29:01 +0200

Liberty & Solidarity is a political organisation aiming to build workplace and community
democracy through direct action and struggling with all those fighting for change. --- We
stand for the power of workers and local people against the bosses and politicians in
order to bring about radical social change, to build a society based on freedom, democracy
and cooperation. ---- Conference report ---- The third national conference of Liberty and
Solidarity was held in Glasgow on 26th and 27th September. This conference marked a year
since our first national conference in Sepetember 2008. Over the intervening year Liberty
and Solidarity members have been involved in organisations and campaigns such as London
Coalition Against Poverty, the Save our Blood Service Campaign, the Industrial Workers of
the World, the Scottish Tenants Organisation, the National Shop Stewards Network and
others. It has been a busy year in which our branches in Reading and London have
consolidated and our geographic reach has spread. We now have members in London, Reading,
Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Cardiff, Bristol, Birmingham and Sheffield.

With our class reorganising in the face of major attacks, this conference represented an
organisation facing the future. Entirely new policy papers were passed covering Media and
Housing. Existing policies were evaluated for success and re-affirmed. Constitutional
amendments on a whole host of issues passed, increasing our effectiveness. Sunday featured
an internal seminar where we had a lively and informative discussion on our industrial
strategy, agreeing ambitious plans for the year ahead. The conference was attended by the
majority of members as well as by a number of observers from organisations in which we are
involved and from our sister organisation in Ireland, the Workers Solidarity Movement.

The discussions and decisions reached at the third National Conference of Liberty and
Solidarity set us on an the road to further growth, consolidation and above all, progress,
over the coming year.
