...Asylum seekers are killing sheep in their back gardens... most refugees are not genuine... people who have a different culture should not come here...

That was the kind of rubbish in last week's Irish Times interview with Ivor Callaly (Fianna Fail TD for Dublin North Central). Following in the footsteps of party colleague Liam Lawlor TD, Calally believes he can reap a political gain by whipping up racist hysteria about refugees coming to Ireland.

One result of statements like his (and newspaper stories like the Star's "Refugee rapists on the rampage") is the growing number of incidents of racist graffiti, racist leaflets, verbal abuse and physical attacks on asylum seekers.

Callaly is standing over his interview. The Anti-Racism Campaign has called on anti-racists to stand up to him. On Saturday next (Dec. 6th) they are going to picket his constituency clinic to demonstrate that he does not speak for people like us, and that racist agitation will always be opposed. Can you spare 30 minutes to join us?

Saturday December 6th 10am Fairview Taxi Rank (this is at the bottom of the Malahide Road, facing Fairview Park)

DART to Fairview Station or busses 27, 27a, 27b, 28, 29a, 30, 31, 31a, 31b, 32, 32b to Fairview Park (the taxi rank is just beyond the pedestrian bridge over the main road)

The Anti-Racism Campaign meets every Wednesday night at 8pm in the Vietnamese Centre (Hardwicke Street, one minute from Parnell Square). Everyone who wants to combat racism is welcome.

And there is the newly formed trade union group of ARC - which seeks to bring together anti-racist workers, especially in areas dealing with refugees like teaching, Irnroid Eireann, the health boards and social welfare. This group is next meeting on Monday next (Dec. 8th) at 6pm in the Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square.
