NEWS ADVISORY For Immediate Release 7pm Sunday November 23rd, 1997

Tonight, Students to Return to APEC Site Following Arrests

Tonight at 10:30 pm, students will once again march from their tent city and attempt to erect an outpost at the Museum of MisAnthropology, which is to be the site of the APEC Leaders' Summit. On Saturday night, the outpost was busted by the RCMP, and four students were arrested for peaceful civil disobedience. The students were asked to sign a document which contained the condition:

"I will not participate or be found in attendance at any public demonstration or rally that has gathered together for the sole purpose of demonstrating against the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation or any nation participating in the so named conference."

"It is chilling that the RCMP are trying to stop people from exercising their legal right to freedom of speech," said Matt Law, one of the arrested students. However, the students readily agreed to sign the document, since they are not protesting solely about APEC, but about the entire APEC world vision. APEC is just one element in a corporate agenda that the students find abhorent.

On Monday Nov. 24th beginning at 9:30 am, the students will occupy the Student Union Building and Brock Hall in order to hold various forums related to APEC. On Tuesday Nov. 25th the students will gather from 9am - 11am in front of the Student Union Building at UBC and then "Crash the Summit" For more information, contact APEC Alert at 571-7540, 251-9914 or alert@netinfo.ubc.ca
