-Police Verbally Harass Protesters, but No Arrests are Made. -Santa Monica Homeless Services Delivers Letter to Protesters
Officers from the Santa Monica Police Dept. arrived at the Independent Nation of Flamingo Squat just hours ago and ordered all the squat's residents to evacuate the premises. Unlike their previous attempt today they apparently gave no legal justification for thier order to evacuate. Nonetheless, the homeless inhabitants of the squat complied and again waited out in the alley until the police left the scene.
The police then threatened to arrest the three homeless protesters who had chained themselves to the building in anticipation of the arrival of the police. Despite police threats, no arrest were made. Shortly after the police left the scene, the homeless residents of the squat returned to their rooms in the motel.
--- A representative from Santa Monica Homeless Services arrived at the Flamingo squat this evening to deliver a letter to the homeless protesters, which apparently requests that they vacate the property. They justify their request with the fact that the Santa Monica cold weather shelters are now open.
However, the cold weather shelters are only open when the tempurature goes below 40 degrees farenheit, or when there is a 50% chance of rain, otherwise all homless shelters in Santa Monica are closed.
We will send the text of the Santa Monica Homeless Services letter, as well as the rebuttal now being drafted by the protesters when we recieve it.
If you wish to go to the Independent Nation of Flamingo Squat to show solidarity, or help out in any way. You can find it at:
1733 Ocean Avenue (off of Pico and next to the Pacific Shores Hotel)
