Reader M. Courbet wrote, correcting the error in the previous issue of TCKF where I wrote "Romi" when it should have been "Roma." He went on to write, for you webmasters, journalists, and editors:

"Rom = 'Gypsy; man - singular masculine (He is [a] Rom.) "Romni = 'Gypsy' woman - singular feminine (She is [a] Romni.) "Roma = 'Gypsy' people - plural masculine (They are Roma.) "Romani = 'Gypsy' - adjective - descriptor (It is Romani. [It is part of the Romani culture.]) = also meaning the 'Gypsy' language (also used, Romanes) "chav = 'Gypsy' boy - singular "chaj (pronounced tchai) = 'Gypsy' girl - singular "chavale = 'Gypsy' boys or youth - plural masculine

"There are many dialects of Romani (or Romanes) but the words above are generally understood by all. Roma is recognized by several worldwide organizations (including the UN and European Union) as the proper name for 'Gypsies.'

"Because Roma and Romani are not understood by all people, many respected newspapers and magazines have adopted the practice of using 'Roma (Gypsies)' in the beginning of an article, thereafter followed by Roma. When the word 'Gypsies' is used it is always capitalised (very important)."

One reader objected to the name, particularly the word "kill," maintaining that it created an impression that we were as bad as the fascists. My sense that the original version, via Woody Guthrie's sticker "This guitar kills fascists" was meant to indicate that the struggle against fascism required many forms in addition to the gun. One was the cultural, ranging from Woody's guitar through John Heartfield's photo-montage and Picasso's "Guernica."

On the other hand, one banjo-strumming rabbi wrote "As a Woody Guthrie aficionado, I appreciated the title; perhaps the more pacifistic version, 'This computer surrounds hate and forces it to surrender,' such as Pete [Seeger] has on his banjo, would be more appealing."

That has possibilities, but methinks that "TCSHAFITS" is even more obscure than "TCKF" (though strangely easier to pronounce.)
