Dear Friends and Comrades of tao.ca

Within the next week we may be experiencing interruptions in service as we upgrade the tao.ca server and move the actual computer to a new location within Toronto Canada. As an autonomous virtual working environment, the tao.ca server has operated on a combination of donated labour, donated equipment, and donated bandwidth. Due to both hardware problems and the need for us to find a new location to connect our machine to the internet, the workers behind tao.ca have had to pool their funds and purchase a new computer to act as the tao.ca server. Fortunately we have been able to find a new location to connect to the Internet (at T1 speed) for free courtesy of our comrades at web.apc.org.

We are writing to ask for your help with our continued operations. The costs in upgrading and maintaining our server, while minimal, still exist. Once we successfully carry through this upgrade and relocation we should be a stable autonomous space within the networks, however we will also still be operating on a negative budget, wherein we the labour behind the project not only donate our work, but now also donate our money earned from other work that we do.

This letter is both an update on our situation and a request for financial help. If you feel that you or others benefit from the services provided by the tao.ca server, than we ask for your financial help in any way possible. We will continue to remain a free space for progressive and radical organizing, and we will continue creating an autonomous space where others may work freely and without cost on various on-line organizing projects. Unfortunately our own operating costs are not able to remain as free.

As a result we the workers of tao.ca have decided to begin formalizing our structure through the formation of a not-for-profit organization, with a transparent, accountable, democratic structure, employing the system of participatory economics as a means of distributing power and responsibility. As we develop this structure it will be laid out in full on our web pages as an example of how workers can organize with autonomy and co-operation.

In order for us to make it through this current transition we request your help. A contribution of any amount that you can afford will be deeply appreciated and put to good use: to continue building networks through communication, and unity through co-operation.

We thank you on behalf of us all,

The Workers of TAO Communications <admin@tao.ca>
