II Congress of the Pemon in Venezuela

The roughly 20000 members of the Pemon ethnic group live in southeastern Venezuela, next to the border with Brazil and Guyana. Their habitat is the heart of the Guyana plateau, northern edge of Amazonia; creole explorers at the turn of the century named the region "Gran Sabana" (the Great Savanna), and since then the area has been very attractive for reasons that have little to do with having the world's tallest water fall and the geological marvels of the "tepuis".

For over 60 years the Pemon have endured mounting predatory and ethnicide pressure from "civilization", which has acted against them in ways that not because of being so overt or indirect end up as destructive as what other ethnic groups have had to suffer since their very existance poses an obstacle to global capitalist expansion. If that weren't enough, recently the Venezuelan government anounced two measures that signal the most dangerous of such attacks: the legalization of mining activities in the Imataca tropical forest, located just north of the Great Savanna, and the erection of a high voltage transmission line to export electricity to northern Brazil, planned to cut across the center of the Pemon territory.

The Pemon are not willing to suffer without a struggle such outrage whose end is their extermination as a people. Their words and acts of protest have been continuous, seeking maximum projection locally as well as nationally and internationally. They have gone to far off Caracas (the capital of Venezuela) to demonstrate, earning the solidarity of those who understand that their fight is part of the struggle of those who are for a free humanity and oppose neoliberal depradation in any of its manifestations.

Today they make a call for the II International Congress of the Pemon, PEMON KUMARAKA 'PAI, from August 5th through the 9th, calling upon their brothers as well as the other ethnic groups from Guyana and northern Amazonia, creoles and foreigners that have actively solidarized with these peoples who suffer the genocidal attacks of capitalism, always unrestrained when searching for gold. The event will take place in several indigenous communities of the Great Savanna, near the town of Santa Elena de Uairen, in the state of Bolivar, Venezuela.

Certainly it's already late for those willing to support this struggle to travel in order to participate in this Congress, but it is important to divulge the event as well as the circumstances in which it takes place, since in the inmediate future the Pemon will continue the struggle and will need extensive, active and informed solidarity. This is the reason why we will do what we can to spread the news via this medium as soon as we have information about the event and what has been agreed at this Congress. _______________________________________________________________________
