BILL TO EXEMPT FOOD AND MEDICINE FROM U.S. EMBARGO AGAINST CUBA

The 37 year old blockade of Cuba is the only embargo in U.S. history that includes denying a country access to food and life-saving medicines, in direct violation of hemispheric and international law.

This is an appeal to support a bill introduced in Congress on June 18th by Representative Torres (D - Los Angeles) to exempt food and medicine from the embargo against Cuba.

According to a March, 1997 report entitled Denial of Food and Medicine: The Impact of the US Embargo on Health and Nutrition in Cuba, prepared by the American Association for World Health (AAWH), "the U.S. embargo has caused a significant rise in suffering--and even deaths--in Cuba. . . . The embargo has closed so many windows that in some instances Cuban physicians have found it impossible to obtain life-saving medicines from any source, under any circumstances. Patients have died." You can obtain a free copy of this report by calling the AAWH at 202-466-5883, fax 202-466-5896, email AAWHstaff@aol.com.

If you have not already done so, please co-sponsor and/or show your support for this bill. The Cuban people should not be suffering and dying because of our government's inhumane policies.

Thank you for giving this matter your serious consideration.
