Microsoft servers shut down temporarily by hackers

On Friday of last week unknown hackers were able to shut down Microsoft corporate servers for brief periods of time. The technique used is called a denial-of-service attack, in which messages are sent continuously to a web server, in an attempt to overwhelm it. News reports indicate that 14 servers were affected before Microsoft plugged the security hole. Among things affected was Microsoft's Internet Information Server.
