MRTA Communique #17 Open Letter To Comrades In Solidarity Hamburg, April 28, 1997 In the year of the 30th anniversary of the death in combat of Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara and the 8th anniversary of the Battle of Molinos. To the political and progressive organizations of the world, to the solidarity organizations and movements, to the progressive men and women of the world. Esteemed comrades, in the year of the 30th anniversary of the murder of Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara, another crime on the part of imperialism has been committed. 14 of our revolutionary brothers and sisters of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, and among them Comandante Nestor Cerpa Cartolini, have been murdered to prevent their dreams of justice and freedom from becoming reality. Just like with the Comandante of America, their physical death will not prevent their example from having revolutionary consequence, or that their chivalry and humanism transcend to all humanity and constitute a banner of struggle against neo-liberalism. In these hours of profound pain, we have received through diverse media demonstrations of solidarity from men and women of conscience in the world who tell us that the death of our brothers and sisters is not and will not be in vain because it has served to make the world conscious that in Peru there is a totalitarian regime which does not hesitate to resort to state terrorism, and which protects with a mantle of impunity death squads like the Colina group, which have cut off thousands of lives by torture, extrajudicial execution, and genocide. At the same time it has uncovered the brutality of an economic model: Neo-liberalism, which in a population of 23 million people has submerged 13 million in poverty and 7 million in conditions of extreme poverty. It is now up to the MRTA militants to continue struggling to realize the dreams of justice and freedom for which our brothers and sisters, members of the "EDGAR SANCHEZ" commando, were murdered on April 22, 1997. Dreams of justice and freedom for which also 52 of our brothers and sisters were murdered on April 28, 1989, in the Battle of Molinos, after having remained without ammunition following prolonged combat, and who after being captured, wounded, and held as prisoners, were executed by the Peruvian army in the battlefield. Together with our people we will persist in the struggle to build a society of peace with social justice where all men and women can have access to jobs, education, health, culture, and relaxation. A society that respects human values, where peace is a natural result of social justice. Through these lines, as a representative of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, I offer to all comrades our gratitude for the demonstrations of solidarity which we have received since the murder of Comandante Nestor Cerpa Cartolini and the members of the Edgar Sanchez Commando.
