Chile Riot Police Break Up Peru Embassy Protest

SANTIAGO, April 25 (Reuter) - Chilean riot police used tear gas on Friday to break up a demonstration at the Peruvian Embassy in protest against the killing of 14 Marxist rebels during Tuesday's commando raid in Lima. Local television showed police with riot shields pushing demonstrators to the ground outside the embassy in downtown Santiago. Several police were injured by stones. The confrontation followed demonstrations outside the embassy by about 200 people waving banners in support of the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement and the Chilean leftist guerrilla group Manuel Rodriguez Patriotic Front. Hostages and Peruvian security sources have said some of the 14 guerrillas were executed by commandos as they surrendered during the storming of the Japanese ambassador's residence. Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori has denied the claims of executions. While it was unclear which individuals or groups might have organised the demonstration, a statement was read for television cameras, saying: "We absolutely reject these acts of such cruelty, which should never happen again." The 14 rebels, one hostage and two commandos died during the operation to free 72 hostages who had been held for 126 days in the residence.
