SOLIDARITY DEMONSTRATION

In Support Of The Striking South Korean Workers!

Thursday, January 16, 1997 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Korean Consulate 460 Park Avenue at 57th Street, NYC

The U.S. Out of Korea Committee of the International Action Center asks you to support the hundreds of thousands striking South Korean workers. The workers have been faced with subpoenas to appear in court, threats of arrest, and police brutality since the start of the strikes on December 26. Despite the repression, the South Korean workers, under the combined leadership of both the outlawed Korean Confederation of Trade Unions and the official Federation of Korean Trade Unions, have remained determined. The solidarity demonstration is in support of the new wider wave of strikes beginning on January 14.

The workers are protesting new anti-labor laws that the government, which is headed by President Kim Young Sam's New Korea Party, snuck past opposition leaders on December 26. Under these laws, management will have more power to lay off workers, hire temporary workers, and bring in scabs to replace the strikers. It also gives renewed power to the Agency for National Security Planning, also known as the Korean CIA, which is known for kidnapping and torturing progressive leaders.

The U.S. Out of Korea Committee supports the South Korean workers' demands for:

(1) the repeal of the new anti-labor, anti-worker laws, (2) the right to union representation of their choice, (3) no new powers to the Korean CIA, (4) restore the no layoffs law.

The U.S. Out of Korea Committee also calls for the withdrawal of all U.S. ground, air, sea, and nuclear forces from Korea. Until this takes place, South Korea will remain a neo-colony of the U.S. This withdrawal is a necessary first step toward the reunification of the country, which all Koreans, north and south, have wanted for many years.

Join us in this SOLIDARITY DEMONSTRATION on Thursday, Jan. 16, in front of the Korean Consulate 460 Park Avenue at 57th Street, Manhattan from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
