active in the Humanities, but unexistent elsewhere.
The number of students on strike and in demonstrations, which is quite
important also, should not give any illusion about the gaols. The students
are reacting as consumers, unhappy with their working conditions. I'm still
waiting to hear one of them say that students ought to be part of the
decision-making process in the universities.
Have no illusions about their professors ! Being one of them, I've used all
my handkerchiefs listening to their complaints during a quarter of a
century. No action, of course. Just the usual power game.
But a social movement is a process : people change through their actions.
And therefore, students - and many other groups who are now joining in
really impressive mass demonstrations - may have some effect.
