1) *The Polytechnic School uprising anniversary*
14/11 - Anarchists attacked a car belonging to the
TV station 'Skychannel in Athens during a
demonstration by tertiary students. After that,
anarchists attacked two banks in Stadiou Street
with molotovs. When the demo reached the Ministry of Education offices,
the police attacked
the protestors. Anarchists and some students
replied with stones and fireworks, which they
threw at p Finally, most of the students held
another demo, and went to the Law School of
Athens University. But the police settled in the
centre of Athens, guarding the university
buildings and city centre.
15/11 - The 3 day demonstrations for the 22nd
anniversary of the Polytechnic School uprising
(17/11/73) commenced. Early in the morning,
anarchists went to the Polytechnic School and
clashed with the students guarding the building.
The student guard every year consists of student
members of Communist Youth (KNE) and the
youth organisation of PASOK (Socialist Party).
The anarchists wanted to occupy the building to
commemorate the Polytechnic School uprising in
1973. They set up barricades in the street outside
the building, interrupng circulation in the city
centre and they attacked the riot police that standing a small distance
from there. They clashed
with the police, using molotovs and stones. Later,
the police managed to expel the anarchists from
around the Polytechnic School area. During the
clashes, about 20 young anarchists are arrested.
They are later freed.
17/11 - Anarchists occupy the Polytechnic School
again. During the afternoon and night of 18
November, big clashes with the police occurred.
The anarchists used molotovs and stonesut the
police attacked them with thousands of tear gas
canisters and other chemicals. The police also
managed to enter the building early in the
morning of 18 November. The building was
surrounded by police. The police arrested a total
of 504 anarchists inside and around the
Polytechnic School who were taken to the Asfalia
(security police headquarters) and then to the
public prosecutor. The most important thing to
note here is that the public prosecutor wanted to
hold them all in custody. At 2pm on 18
November, relatives, friends, lawyers and others
demonstrate against that decision.
2) *In Thessaloniki*
About 500 anarchists gathered at Kamara, at the
city centre, on 14 November. The police attacked
them without reason and a clash followed, during
which 4 anarchists were arrested. They are
Yannis Anagnostou (23), Paris Sofos (22), Elias
Hatziliadis (24) and a young girl K. Z. (17). After
clashing with police, the anarchists went to the
Theological School of the university, occupied it
and demanded that the 4 arrested be freed. Two
or three attempts to leave the building ended in
clashes with the police, during which 9 police
officers and 1 civilian were injured. The anarchist
occupiers expressed their solidarity with the
prisoners at Korydallas prison.
3) *Riot in Korydallas prison*
14/11 - One of the biggest riots in recent years
occurred at Korydallas prison, near Athens. The
prisoners smashed windows, doors etc, and held 7
prison officiers hostage. The prisoners obtained
control of the whole prison and clashed with the
police surrounding it. During the riot, 3 prisoners
died of drug overdose, because the chemist's as
smashed by the prisoners - many of whom are
addicts - and thousands of drugs passed around.
There was also some fighting during the riot
between Greek and non-Greek (e.g. Albanian,
Romanian) prisoners - unfortunately, some racist
ideas have penetrated the prison system, as in the
community, It also seems that a mafia made up of
some prisoners, prison staff etc is controlling the
prisons in Greece. Late on 16 November the
prison riot ended. At the same time, in some other
prisons like Agios Stefanes of Patra, Alikamassos,
Halkida etc, the prisoners there held hunger
strikes and intended to riot. The miserable
situation in Greek prisons still exists, but as
anarchists we aim not to improve the prison
system, but to smash it.
4) *Odisseas Kambouris*
13/11 - Odisseas Kambouris, a 23 year old
anarchist, was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment.
He was charged with attacking the Communist
Party (KKE) headquarters in Perissos, Athens, in
June 1994. During the summer and autumn of
1994, Odisseas held a hunger strike demanding his
freedom. A lot of anarchist demonstrations and
other actions have occurred during this time in
solidarity with him.
5) *Kostas Kalaremas*
During police raids against some anarchists' home
in October 1995, Kostas Kalaremas (23) was
arrested. He has been in prison since that time,
and has begun a hunger strike demanding his
release. The police refuse to transfer him to
hospital, despite his health being in a critical state.
Kostas was charged with terrorist acts and armed
bank robberies. He is the editor of the anarchist
paper/zine *The Printer's Demon*, and is a total
objector to the army. He is now in his 40th day of
the hunger strike.
