BUSTING THE SHOW
Motivated by the spanish presidency of the E.U. and the attendant official
acts, different organizations are setting up alternative forums. On October
27, 28 and 29 the Summit of Ministers of Labor of the E.U. took place in
Cordoba, as a response to it and with the motto "Unmask Capitalist Europe"
an alternative forum for employment and a demonstration that assembled 1500
people took place.
November 24th through the 28th Barcelona will host the Euromediterranean
Conference and on December 15th and 16th in Madrid there will be the Summit
of Chiefs of State and Government of the E.U. There are alternative forums
prepared for these dates in both cities. The coordinator BALADRE and the CGT
will stage a march against unemployment, three columns leaving from
different places will converge in Madrid.
STUDENT'S STRUGGLE
On November 2nd the student organization Ikasle Abertzaleak convened a day
of struggle at the Basque Country University against authoritarianism. (For
a long time security guards control student's movement, tear down posters
etc.) 3000 students demonstrated at the Leioa campus. The demonstration
ended at the rectory, protected by security guards, at the end, hooded
students stoned the glass windows. The ertzaintzas (basque police) went into
action and there was a battle at the campus between hundreds of students and
the fuzz, that lasted for two hours with lots of damage done.
VERY BRIEF
* Sieglinde Hoffman, prisoner of the RAF, who spent more than 15 years in
prison was sentenced to life imprisonment for an act committed in 1979. The
sentence arrives just two days before she was freed after serving another
sentence.
* Gijon's judicial police inspector Ricardo Fernandez was sentenced to ten
years in prison for heroin traffic.
* A security guard at PRYCA in Lugones (Asturias) shot and killed a person,
after pursuing for 4 Km. in a car stolen by the rent-a-cop. The victim had
allegedly stolen two bottles of cologne.
* Since a year ago the Ateneo Libertario Libre Pensamiento functions in
Barcelona. It has a well stocked library and several workshops. They are
located at the Parque de las Aguas. Trinidad Vieja s/n 08.033 Barcelona.
* October 14th, at the place in Alicante province where the bodies of Lasa
and Zabala were found buried in lime a monolith was placed in their memory,
paid for with donations by the people of Tolosa. Three days later the
monolith was destroyed.
INTERNATIONAL
* In September there were large poopular mobilizations against the integrist
military regime in Sudan.
* The public administration workers in Rio Negro (Argentina) took to the
streets to demand payment of their salaries. Several official buildings were
looted.
* In Mexico social conflict and armed resistance spreads to the state of
Guerrero.
* In Venezuela students confronted the police in protest against the
neoliberal economic policy. A student and a cop died.
EVICTION IN SEVILLA
(Molotov) On August 23rd the social center Cruz Verde which had been okupied
for five years has been evicted. Note that there was no judicial order. Days
before the police tried to evict another social center, the people inside
escaped through an adjoining house and the police left.
EVICTION IN MADRID
(Molotov) On September 19th Villamil 9, in the Estrecho neighborhood, was
evicted. For eight months 20 people lived there. 25 squatters locked
themselves in the building and offered resistance to the eviction. They
welded the doors shut and blockaded several floors. At 10 the court's
secretary arrived notifying about the eviction, as there was no call to the
police. At 1.30 the anti-riots arrived and with blows and shoves dispersed
the hundred people gathered outside. The police took over two hours to
vacate the building. Security guards with dogs took positions in the
building to thwart a reokupation. During the night there were several
sabotage acts, graffitti, bank windows stoned and molotov cocktails against
bank branches and INEM offices.
KASAL POPULAR
The campaign against the eviction of Kasal Popular in Valencia continues. On
September 23rd one thousand people demonstrated against the eviction. The
demonstration was festive, but towards the end there were incidents as the
police charged. The okupas confronted the repressive forces and ten of them
were arrested.
ILLEGAL ITOIZ
The National Court has ruled for the annulment of the approval of the Itoiz
dam and the dam itself, considering them contrary to law. The sentence
totally validates the recourses of the Coordinadora de Itoiz against the
reservoir. The sentence means a hard blow against the government and
parliament of Navarra, staunch defenders of the reservoir in which they have
already spent billions. Despite the illegality the works continue. On
October 25th several ecologists got to stop the works once more, suspending
themselves from the cables that carry cement from a quarry to the
construction site. On September 23rd 10,000 people demonstrated in Pamplona
against the reservoir and on October 28th a similar number did the same
around Itoiz.
ANTINUCLEAR INSUMISOS
On November 9th six insumisos chained themselves to the door of the French
Consulate in Bilbo, protesting against the french nuclear tests. These young
people had violated the penitentiary third degree on November 6th. They were
arrested by the erzaintza (basque police) who used tear gas and clubs to
disperse nearly fifty assembled antimilitarists.
ACTS OF SABOTAGE
(Molotov) G.R.R. (Radical Response Groups) claimed responsibility for
several actions in Madrid on September 6th in protest against France's
nuclear tests. The actions consisted of pintadas (political graffitti T.N.)
and sealings, as well as the placement of incendiary devices in several
banking entities that have french capital.
TORTURE HERE
A Berlin court has suspended the extradition to Spain of the alleged ETA
collaborator Benjamin Ramos. The court ruled that it's not guaranteed that
Ramos would receive a treatment in accordance with human rights and also
because of his illness (he's seropositive) receive adecuate treatment. The
ruling admits that in the Spanish State political prisoners are tortured,
likewise it compiles information from Amnesty International where the
diverse tortures (bagging the head, electric shocks, the bathtub, mock
executions) habitually practiced in your nearest police station are described.
A hard blow to the democratic and european spanish government. Days later
Ramos was acquitted of the only crime he was accused of in Germany (forging
of a public document). Two years ago a Brussles court ruled similarly. It's
noteworthy that all the politicians, newsmen and telepreachers, who have
been so indignant about this ruling, haven't said anything about the
National Court's refusal to extradite to Austria nazi Gerd Honsk, fugitive
of austrian justice and a refugee in Barcelona.
INCIDENTS AT LAS ROZAS
Towards the end of September the Guardia Civil charged against 8000 young
people in the fairgrounds at Las Rozas (Madrid) during the local
festivities. The mayor (of the PP) decreed the closing of bars at four in
the morning. Saturday night security guards tried to close the bars by
force. This incident escalated into a battle that lasted more than three
hours. There were 43 wounded, among them 17 rent-a-cops. These events are
the right's attempt to restrict the partying hours and bar openings, to
adopt bad european ways (grey and boring cities where the streets are empty
at 22hrs). They forget about the good European ways (social aid programs).
This way they pretend, medium term, to keep open at night only the private
clubs for the elite.
REINOSA STRUGGLE
At the beginning of November there have been protest and strong actions
(barricades, cutting communication arteries, confrontations with security
forces ...) by Sideneor (formerly Forjas y Aceros) workers against the new
reconversion. According to union sources, the situation is worse than in
1987 when for several months there was a long and hard struggle in Reinosa
by this company's workers. Let's remember Gonzalo Ruiz, dead after inhaling
toxic gas hurled by the Guardia Civil.
SHIT-ASS BUREAUCRATS
On friday November 3rd 15 people were arrested (one more the following day)
in Barcelona, Valencia and Cadiz in what the police called a near definitive
blow against GRAPO. At the end only three went to prison for belonging to
the comandos and one for collaboration. The other 12 arrestees were set free
inmediately by the police or the judge. Among the eight arrested in Cadiz
several were outstanding militants of PCE and IU. While militant and base
organizations solidarized with their comrades and gathered at the police
station worried about the customary ill treatment in the application of the
antiterrorist law, members of the Federal Executive of PCE-IU "totally
disclaimed all statements made in the name of IU in favor of the arrestees
in relation to GRAPO", besides threatening with inmediate termination. IU's
management has behaved with its own militants worse than the police, not
even respecting the presumption of innocence. After being freed, Anguita
recanted and said he would demand and explanation from the Minister of the
Interior.
ANARCHOCYCLISTS
The last friday of every month in London there is a bicycle demonstration
against polluting vehicles. 1000 cyclists have taken part in the UK's
capital and there have been similar mobilizations in Bath, Edimburg,
Hillhead, Glasgow, Birmingham and Lancaster. Noteworthy are incidents with a
particularly lousy taxi driver.
MURDERED OGONIS
On November 10th writer Saro Wiwa and eight activists of the Movement for
the Survival of the Ogoni People were executed by Nigeria's military regime,
who disregarded widespread international pressure. The ogonis live in an
area of Nigeria very rich in oil fields and are running a campaign for the
survival of the people threatened by oil exploitation and the attendant
pollution in Ogoni territory. Multinational Shell, against which the
assassinated activists had mounted a campaign, is the oil fields exploiter.
The military in power, in a kangaroo trial, have gotten rid of the most
outstanding ogoni activists. Protests against Shell's attitude have not
waited long and have spread worldwide.
SYNDICALIST OUT OF JAIL
On October 25th asturian syndicalist miner Jose Primitivo was set
provisionally free. He had gone to jail in August after being sentenced for
alleged attacks on an engineer (see Acratador #46). His liberation is due to
the fact that the Constitutional Court has admitted an appeal against the
jail sentence.
REPRESSION IN CHILE
This September 11th, during the anniversary of Pinochet's and the CIA's
military coup against the government of Salvador Allende there were
mobilizations. A young man was murdered by the police and 169 demonstrators
arrested, three of whom, among them young libertarian Julio Castillo, were
put at the disposal of the military justice system and may be sentenced to
as much as 20 years in prison.
Days later, in Concepcion there were hard confrontations at the University
in protest against the ridiculous sentence given some torturers of the DINA,
tried by crimes committed during the military dictatorship. Young
libertarian Vladimir Gutierrez was severely wounded, in spite of which he
was arrested.
LAST MINUTE
* On November 10th, in Barcelona, after an informative gathering on the Army
and insumision, motorists of the Urban Guard threw themselves upon the
assembled, attacking indiscriminately. During the afternoon 14 people were
arrested, including a newsman that covered the event.
* The young people from the CS Minuesa accused of incidents that happened in
the summer of 91 have been sentenced to a total of 4 years in jail (more
information in the next issue).
*** ARE WE DIFFERENT, ARE WE EQUAL? ***
We've seen a lot of this motto provided by the Ministry of Social Affaires
and its satellite organizations such as Youth Against Intolerance. These
government campaigns, plenty useless, superficial and hypocritical are only
good to wash bad consciences. This last motto seems to us to be a cynical
application of "all animals are equal, but some are more equal than others"
(George Orwell's "Animal Farm").
Meanwhile the social minister and her tolerant "youth" waste time and
ill-spend tax money stolen from the workers in diverse stupidities. The
participation of nazi sect Nueva Acropolis in this campaign of itself
illegitimizes it, while the Minister of Interior, without skipping a beat,
sends all its police forces against the inmigrants. In Ceuta, the mayor and
the proper citizens come out in support of the police in its hunt for the
inmigrant and to top it off build a wall that will separate Ceuta from
Morocco. The theoreticians of capitalism's organic democracies disgressed
and waxed over the fall of the Berlin wall. Now they say nothing about the
new wall (in many places already physical), that separates North and South.
The motto "we're different, we're equal" has also sunk deep in the
judiciary. Nazi repeat offenders are quickly set free and tried for minor
faults and antifascists that exercise self-defense receive a desproportioned
and manipulated application of the law.
