POLICE FORCES INVADE NUXALK'S (CANADA) TERRITORY
CNT.Madrid 31/10/95

On September 23rd 41 agents of Canada's Royal Mounted Police came within 65
Km from the Ista (Fog Creek) territory, to face a protest and occupation of
this territory by the association of the Nuxalk indians and the Forest
Action Network.

This action is to demand that International Forest Products (Interfor) stop
the forest's exploitation in territory not ceded by the Nuxalk, that the
canadian governments recognize Nuxalk's sovereignity over their land and
stop issuing licenses for its exploitation. They also demand that forestal
exploitation of the Great Coast forest stop inmediately, this being the last
large extension of temperate rain forest left on the planet.

The 25 people that remain at Ista (Fog Creek), the Nuxalk Elders and their
families and the 6 forest guards are committed to continuing the occupation.
The use of excessive police force against this peaceful protest is yet
another example of the relationship between police, government and forest
exploitation enterprises.

RESPONSE TO THE SUMMIT OF EUROPEAN LABOR MINISTERS IN CORDOBA.
Cordoba.UPA/Egin.30/10/95

reunion of the European Union's Ministers of Labor, under the presidency of
the spanish state. At this summit, as usual, the ministers came to the
conclusion that to create jobs the european states must abide by the
"macroeconomic convergence criteria" (inflation, public deficit, special
interests ...) at the same time structural reforms are implemented, among
which the spanish minister Jose Antonio Grinan mentioned the "flexible
restructuring of work hours, the linking of salaries to productivity and the
promotion of systems of social protection that encourage the active search
for work".
For their part, and just as it was done in Canarias with the Summit of
Ministers of the Interior (see Bulletin #57) twenty-some social, political
and syndical organizations from Cordoba called an Alternative Forum for
Employment, to "demonstrate the false rhetoric that the European Union
presents us as a great epic of the european peoples in their search for
unity and peace, when in reality it is but one more instance of the
enlargement of markets and defense of corporate interests by political
means, in the purest capitalist tradition". This Forum, which was attended
by people from different areas of the spanish state and other parts of the
world, organized debates and workshops, as well as protests in the streets
of Cordoba: a march saturday the 21st of October, a bicycle caravan thursday
the 26th, and to top it off a demonstration on sunday the 29th. This last
protest assembled 200 people and ended in front of the Merced Palace, seat
of the Minister's reunion.

ALCALA INSUMISO DOES NOT SHOW UP AT HIS TRIAL
Alcala de Henares.UPA.30/10/95

(Insumiso: Person that refuses to perform military (or alternative) service
T.N.)

Thursday October 26 should have been the date of the trial for Alcala de
Henares (Madrid) insumiso Raul, for whom the D.A. demanded the up to the
present hardest sentence of 4 years, two months and a day in prison.
However, with the backing of a hundred people that gathered at the Court,
the insumiso did not appear at his trial, instead he sent a letter to the
judge in which he explained his position. The letter was read at the
gathering. For her part, the judge decreed a search and capture order. A few
days before, on sunday the 22nd, around 300 people demonstrated through the
city in support of insumision, with special mention to Raul and the
dispersed Navarra insumisos, one of whom, In~igo Ramirez, serves his
sentence at the Alcala-Meco prison. There are five Alcala insumisos under
search and capture orders for not attending their trials.
