Subject: Nuclear Power Plant in Eastern Europe

------------------fwd------------------------------------------------

The Slovak government is beginning construction of a new Russian-designed and
built nuclear power plant. It has been labeled as one of the ten worst plants
in teh world.. BEFORE it has even been built. The government had the chance
to use western money, designs and contractors with a package from the European
Bank of Reconstruction and Development, but instead decided to go with a
package from Russia which would produce a plant which would not even meet EU
standards. This, in a time when Slovakia is trying to enter the EU.

Please write a letter to Slovak prime-minister expressing your opinion against
the further construction of a nuclear power plant in Slovakia. Please print
it out, add 60 cents stamp and send it to him, it is very important and
Slovak environmentalists need hundreds {if not thousands,..or hundreds of
thousands} letters like these to be sent to prime minister of Slovak
republic {central Europe, part of a former Czechoslovakia}.

Thank you very much. If you can, please distribute this letter via email to
your friends and via internet around the globe. For additional informations
contact Juraj Krivosik {For Mother Earth} on civiclf@mtn.org or 612/672-0006 in
Minneapolis, or click on Global 2000 {austrian environmental organization}
homepage: global2000@t0.or.at where you'll find more information about the
Slovak nuclear power plant. And if you send the letter, please send me an
email message, so that I can coordinate the letter-campaign in Minnesota.
Thank you very much.

Mr. prime minister Vladimir Meciar
Urad vlady SR Namestie Slobody 1
Bratislava 810 00 Slovak republic, Europe

Dear Mr. Meciar,

As you undoubtely know Mochovce nuclear power plant with the highest
probabality would not get the licence to operate it in the both Western
Europe and USA. It is a power plant which does not have a secondary
containment, the basic safety requirement of all the nuclear power plants in
the developped world. Mochovce NPP does not meet many of the other safety
standards, it is too old already now. And your interest to complete it with
the cooperative Russian institutions and Czech companies is not acceptable
for me as a person who cares about the global environmental situation.

Slovakia has a significant problems with the nuclear power already now by
operating the Bohunice nuclear power plant. It is one of the 10 most
dangerous reactors in the world according to the recent report of the US
Department of Energy. The first two reactors should be phased-out
immediately in order not to increase the risk of an nuclear accident and
not to accumulate the amount of spent nuclear fuel, the problem which has
even not been solved here in the United States of America, and nowhere else
in the world. Mochovce NPP does not belong to the solution of a Bohunice
problem. It is only a contribution to it.

The Mochovce project documentation has not solved the problem of the
decommissioning of the units after its phase-out and does not satisfactorily
solve the problem of the nuclear waste. The cooperation with Russians and
Czech companies is not the healthy path for Slovak Republic. The loan is too
high for you and despite that still does not meet the safety standard
necessary for the operation of a nuclear power plant.

Because of the Mochovce were shown as economicaly unreliable according to a
several studies, the sooner you halt the further construction of it, the
more you help the Slovak economy. Instead of a dangerous and expensive
nuclear power plant you shoud favour the cheaper programs of energy savings
and increased efficiency. You should promote the launching of more smaller
cogeneration units producing both heat and electricity fired by natural gas
and significantly increase the program of renewable energy sources. Only the
clean environment can be the right environment for a prospering economy and
for the happy life of your people, citizens of the Slovak republic.

As a world citizen I watch the Mochovce problem carefuly and would be very
pleased if you would use your political power to support non-nuclear energy
production ways in Slovakia. Mr. prime minister, so, if you care about the
health of the Slovak economy , please favour the altenative solution of
energy production in your country. Mochovce nuclear power plant is a very
bad solution for your economy. Help Slovakia and care about the
environmental protection . STOP MOCHOVCE !
Thank you. Sincerely yours,
