CARACAS, Sept 26 (Reuter) - Six inmates were killed and six
injured during a riot in an overcrowded high-security
Venezuelan jail on Tuesday, authorities said.
Prison director Garofalo Dangelo said fighting among inmates
broke out after breakfast in Tocoron jail outside the city of
Maracay, 110 miles (180 km) west of the capital Caracas.
``Some prisoners attacked other inmates with firearms and
knives and the violence turned into a riot,'' he told Reuters.
Six inmates died in the hospital from their wounds, he added.
Calm returned after National Guard troops were called in.
Tocoron jail is one of Venezuela's 32 maximum security
prisons and houses 1,088 inmates although it has a capacity of
750, the Justice ministry said. Hundreds die each year in the
country's packed and often filthy jails, where weapons are
common.
