PARIS, Oct 5 (Reuter) - Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels said
on Thursday 23 civilians had been killed and tens of thousands
made homeless by shelling since government forces began an
offensive in the north of the country last Sunday.
A statement from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)
received in Paris said most of the casualties from what it
called indiscriminate shelling were elderly women.
It said government forces kept shelling Chirupidy, Puthur,
Neerveli and Vallai through the night in Operation Thunder
Strike.
The armed forces, fighting for control of the rebel-held
Jaffna peninsula, have said they captured 25 square km (10
square miles) of rebel territory since breaking out of the
government-controlled Palaly air base.
