. . . In opposition to certain elements who proclaim themselves to be
"ultra-
revolutionary" - and which we in no way confuse with the bulk of students - in
opposition to the "leftists" who appear to want to mislead the people's
movement by pushing it into adventurism and who are trying to revive old
anarchist ideas, we have said and we still say: it is not the banner of
anarchy and
provocation that will lead the labour and democratic movement to victory in
France. For the working class in our country, anarchism, far from being the last
word in the science of revolution, is nothing but a relic that it has long since
fought and beaten.
The flag of working-class struggles in the modern world is not the faded
black flag of anarchy, but is both the red flag of socialism and the
tricolour of
the great French Revolution, the flag of the nation. (Lengthy applause.)
In all our demonstrations, on all of our platforms, these two flags are
brought
closely together. For the national flag is not the property of reaction and
the big
bosses, who practise policies which go against the interests of our country.
It is
the property of the French people.
We communists raise high this flag. For our struggle for the interests
of the
working class and for socialism is at the same time a struggle for the
interests of
our nation. The sacrifices that our Party has committed itself to for the
liberation
of the country and all our policies bear witness to it: it is with pride
that we can
say, "We're backing France."
Labour activists and authentic revolutionaries never have been and
never will
be "hot-heads" or "anarchists" and it is shocking to see that the PSU has allied
itself to these elements on several occasions.
The adventurers and would-be "ultra-revolutionaries" are playing into the
hands of the Gaullist regime.
Some leaflets are talking about building a "revolutionary party", but true
revolutionary parties are not made from adventurers and renegades. The only
revolutionary party in the proper sense of the term is the French Communist
Party: that is precisely why De Gaulle is attacking it.
The communists are in fact at all times responsible men acting with
lucidity
and cool-headedness and take care that all of their decisions and all their
actions
serve tle interests of the workers, of the people and of the country
efficiently....
The highly responsible behaviour of the workers in the factories which they
are occupying is a powerful arm in their struggle against the regime and the
bosses.
On the other hand, the pseudo-revolutionaries who associate themselves with
anarchy, maoism and trotskyism are objectively doing the Gaullist regime the
greatest favour possible, for by their methods and thcir anti-communism, they
aim to divide the working class, to distort the revolutionary movement and
democracy and in doing so to distance the working class's natural allies
from it.
They are playing into the hands of the Gaullist regime. (Applause.)
It is indeed by pointing to their violence and by waving the empty
threat of
civil war that the Gaullist regime is trying to draw to it the very social
groups who
have every reason for breaking away from it and joining the great people's
movement.
We can in no way allow this charade and adventurism to endanger the
success of the struggle for democracy and socialism.
