(en) liberta salonica: Solidarity with the hunger & thirst striker Vassilis Dimakis (gr) [machine translation]

Date Thu, 12 Apr 2018 10:07:42 +0300

Detained Vassilis Dimakis, a student of the Department of Political Sciences and Public Administration of the University of Athens, has been on hunger strike since 14/3. On 6/4 he announced that he was also on a thirst strike. He / she is applying for an education permit so that he / she can attend the courses of his / her school (with the so-called electronic supervision wristband). His request, however, has been rejected three times by the three-member Disciplinary Board of the Korydall Prison. For the negative opinion on educational leave, the council used the pretext that the permit was not considered necessary, as the lessons that the prisoner is asking to attend is of a theoretical nature. The law, of course, does not have a special regulation that defines the exemption of education leave when it comes to theoretical lessons. This justification is the inspiration of the prison council in order to have an excuse for his vengeful and arbitrary judgment so as not to be degraded in reality. Even the faculty teachers attended by the prisoner assured in writing that attendance is essential for student progress and successful examinations. However, state and judicial machismy is not hidden, as it was not hidden when the prisoner was confined a few days before the exam, when he was forbidden to visit the library when he was deprived of his chair and table in his cell, in order not to have the ability to read. After the arbitrariness and authoritarian mockery of Vassilis Dimakis from the side of the state, however,

The right to education leave was not granted to prisoners by the state. It is the property of many and long-lasting struggles, first of the prisoners themselves and then of the solidarity movement. The case of Vassilis Dimakis concerns the tangible implementation, once again, of an exemption from state mechanisms. The very legal framework of bourgeois justice is self-extinguished and replanted in such a way that the state avenues the one facing it. The moment this approach is made is not at all accidental. It is a reflexive, self-protecting, but at the same time aggressive, movement of the state, as well as of its judicial and prison staff, to try to reduce the resistance of the prisoners against the new prison and penal code, which dictate further hardening of the repressive measures for detainees. Especially in the case of education permits, the forthcoming Penitentiary Code lays down the right of the prosecutor to veto the granting of the leave, with the result that barriers to the study of detainees are now explicitly barred.

The tales of the progressive left, the champion of democratic rights and humanism, are "stories about wolves", which can no longer be used for voting purposes either. We have no illusions about the institutional role played by the individual governor of state power, whether right-wing or leftist. Those who are the civilian staff of capital, the everyday craftsmen, will find us constantly against them, as long as they strike mercilessly the world of the struggle, as long as they continue to plunder the social majority as long as there is still oppression and exploitation of man by man.

Prisons are the culprits of bourgeois democracy. These are the places where violence and the imposition of the dominant system are a daily routine for the incarcerated. They are the warehouses where all those who are left over from the productive design of capital, as well as fighters who are confronted with sovereignty, aim to overthrow it. In prisons, intensified processes of discipline, obedience and consolidation of sovereign social and productive relations are intensified. It is violent - or by using psychological and sometimes using physical violence - the detachment of prisoners' consent to the tyranny of the state and capital. Prisons are the test environment of state authoritarianism. The state and its service staff, which manages prison staff, cut and sew against the powerful will, away from the public lights and the attention of the rest of the body. At the same time, however, prisons also aim to intimidate them outside the walls. They show them what awaits them if they think of putting them with their state, their capital and their auxiliary mechanisms.

Where humanity is leveled, there, in all sorts of prisons, the curtains of bourgeois democracy are closed for good; * there is the most powerfully applied Power; * there is a brutal demonstration of power in the state; * there the prison bars sometimes watered with blood.

The case of Vassilis Dimakis concerns all the oppressed. The further prevalence of state and perverse authoritarianism will mean the formation of a negative stock for the whole social base and first and foremost for the prisoners themselves. But we can not be silent in the face of injustice, exploitation and oppression. We can not ignore barbarism. The outrageous and vengeful attack on the repressive mechanisms of our state is filled with rage. Our anger is channeled into the class and social clash of the downstream of the privileged and powerful. This conflict must be stepped up before the aspiring state and capitalist totalitarianism before the hardening of the repression and the conditions of imprisonment.

Solidarity is the strongest weapon of the oppressed in their struggle against state and capital. We express our solidarity with both the prisoners in the Hellenic territory that fight against the new prison and penal code and the prisoner Vasilis Dimakis, who is excluded because of the vengeful handling of the state's repressive mechanisms by the acquired right of prisoners on education leave.
