In September 1937, when the war broke out as a result of Franco's military coup in Spain, a republican submarine surfaced in the harbor of Brest. ---- It is a singular and remarkable story told by Damien Cuvilier, Bertrand Galic and Kris in their comic book Nuit noire sur Brest. With such a title, one does not expect to follow the adventures of the crew of a Spanish submarine in the middle of the Spanish Civil War. And yet this historical episode is remembered by the authors and illustrator. In September 1937, when the war broke out as a result of Franco's military coup in Spain, a republican submarine surfaced in the harbor of Brest. ---- Kris had already visited Brest, his hometown. In A man died, he had us plunged into the city in full reconstruction after World War II. Brest, of which nothing remained, according to the words of Prévert, after the rains of "iron, fire, steel and blood", is intact in this album.

The military port welcomes in a more or less constrained way this Spanish republican submersible who needs repairs. The prefect was annoyed by the commander's request for help, entangled that he was in the policy of "non-intervention" decided by the French State against the coup d'état of the nationalist Franco. The Communists and the Brest anarchists salute the arrival of this republican crew and the support in their fight which is also theirs. This international solidarity of class will not be too much: a Francoist operation is being prepared with the assistance of members of extreme right-wing French parties.

History is told to us from the point of view of a mysterious man "in mission", whose identity is hardly known. The characters take a step by step in this gallery composed of a well-informed journalist, a republican crew and its commander, Mingua, who works in the dance hall where newcomers come to party, and Rich men who plot for Franco by drinking the Suze in a luxury hotel. It would not be complete without the evocation of the Breton anarchist René Lochu and his comrades who organize the struggle against fascism.

Night in Brest brings us to visit the city of Breton under a sky more often sunny than rainy. Seagulls fly over the harbor, oysters are the only meal on the menu of the local bistro. This cartoon highlights the beauty and calm of a city that is about to be bruised, destroyed. Its inhabitants and inhabitants will witness or actors and actresses of a historical struggle that prefigures the Resistance. The "non-intervention" of the democracies will not have saved the peace and opened a boulevard to fascism as we could imagine at the time. The narrator begins by presenting himself as a man who loves black "and his darkness without whom the light would have no reason to be". The comic book concludes a record of the historian Patrick Gourlay on this episode. Light is made on an episode of the Spanish war but also on an event of the anti-fascist struggle.
