East Timor Action Network (ETAN) and the Video Activist Network
(VAN) present a video screening and discussion of the current situation
in the country of East Timor.
*******************************************
In 1975, the island country of East Timor was invaded by Indonesia,
one of the worst atrocities of this century. The occupation has claimed
the lives of over 200,000 Timorese people, one-third of the original
population.

Learn why East Timor remains subjugated and why the U.S. is still
closely allied with Indonesia at this Video Activist Network (VAN)
screening of "License to Kill" (46 min) 1999, by Australian
Broadcasting Co. and "Viva Timor Leste!" (28 in) 1999, by Andrew
McNaughton. A speaker will also be present from the East Timor Action
Network (http://www.etan.org) which supports self-determination and
human rights for the people of East Timor.

FEATURED VIDEOS:

- "License to Kill" (46 min) 1999, by Australian Broadcasting Co.
A compelling documentary on paramilitary violence in East Timor. It
features interviews with death squad leaders and vividly shows the
paramilitaries as extensions of the Indonesian military apparatus,
which in turn receives key economic, political and military support
from the U.S. http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/stories/s20270.htm

- "Viva Timor Leste!" (28 min) 1999, by Andrew McNaughton
Australian documentary on student organizing during the brief democratic
opening of spring-summer 1998.

ALSO FEATURING a discussion with Pam Sexton, a very knowledgable U.S.
activist who recently returned from East Timor with the Peace Brigades.
