Dublin protest against deportations

The government has been deporting asylum seekers over
the last fortnight. More are due to be thrown out of
Ireland before Easter. Some of these are fleeing
persecution and torture (from countries like Nigeria,
Algeria, Ukraine, Turkey/Kurdistan, Roma from
Romania, etc.) Others are fleeing poverty (from
countries like Somalia, Zaire, Burundi, Russia, etc.)

This is being done under the 'Dublin Convention'
which says that refugees must apply for asylum in the
first European Union country they set foot in. As
Ireland is an island, and with few direct
international airline flights, this makes it almost
impossible to obtain asylum here. Other EU
countries, because of economic and even arms trading
links, will not admit that refugees will be put in
danger if deported back to their home countries.
Britain has sent people back to Nigeria, Germany has
sent Kurds back to Turkey, etc.

Irish people have emigrated to countries all over the
world. In Munich alone there are twice as many Irish
people as there are asylum seekers in Ireland. But
when black or poor people come to "Ireland of the
Welcomes" they are shown the door. The Anti-Racism
Campaign refuses any division of people into
'deserving refugees' and 'undeserving immigrants';
and opposes all deportations.

Tomorrow (Saturday March 14th) the Anti-Racism
Campaign is asking people to protest outside the
Department of Justice on St Stephen's Green from
12.30 to 1.30pm. Come along and show that the
government does not speak for you when it throws
people out of our country.
