20 PROTEST IN WEST VIRGINIA AGAINST
MEXICAN ARMY ATTACKS ON ZAPATISTAS
Morgantown, West Virginia, Appalachia, USA/EE.UU. -
On Thursday July 9, 1998, from noon to 2 PM, the Morgantown Zapatista
Support Group held a picket to protest Mexican Army attacks on
Zapatista-supporting Indian villages in Chiapas, Mexico. The demonstration
was held in front of the Federal Building/Post Office, the nearest US
government office. We passed out fliers which condemn the Mexican Army
attacks and let people know the attacks are US-backed.
Our signs said: "Freedom for Mexican & US Indians!"; "We don't have ta
NAFTA!"; "Mexican & U.S. Militaries; Hands Off Mexican Indians!"; "!Vive
Zapata!"; "!Viva EZLN!"; "No to the New World Dis-Order, More Democracy
Not Less", etc. We had a large banner saying, "Stop The US War On Mexico."
For two hours we were hard to ignore. We had 'info.packs' of
background material on the Zapatistas for the more inquistive. As usual,
some refused our fliers, but most people seemed at least curious and took
them. Most had never heard of the Mexican situation. We had assumed this;
one purpose of the picket was to let people in our area know about it for
the first time. We also told folks about the upcoming Leonard Peltier Food
Drive For Chiapas which we're going to support.
We contacted all media in the area; only some responded. The day before
the picket two MZSG members were interviewed on an AM radio station (mostly
conservative) for twenty minutes. During the picket two members were
interviewed by the statewide FM NPR affiliate, which is heard across West
Virginia and parts of Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia.
The local (conservative) newspaper sent a photographer and a reporter who
interviewed many of us. But the paper canned (censored?) our story! This is
odd because the AM radio station that aired us is run by the same company.
The picket was initiated by four anarchists. A Marxist joined in, as did
a radical liberal and others. Three anarchists came from Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, and five youth from the Hutterian 'Bruderhof' farm in nearby
Farmington, Pennsylvania came as well. There were 20 demonstrators total. We
feel it was a success despite some media ignoring us.
At least now, the issue may have been heard by many statewide.

A stand up tragedian
I'd still ask the ultimate
of art and poetry
Only the absolute need apply
(ah hypocrite postmodern, pass by!)
Bare beauty
like a rock statue in the ocean
above the waves unbreachable
The Goddess bald
or the Godhead shaven
seen full-on
Let them turn toward us
gesturing
insurgent
And shake the world
shake our senses
sensors and censors
Let the walls of the temple shake
and the concrete cities crumble
Let the stars shine through
A hole in heaven
(as through the dome of the Pantheon)
to see the ultimate
white night
the final
