Hyundai Motors Agreed To Redundancy Dismissal;
Some Workers Rejecting Strongly
The Hyundai Motors Union agreed to dismiss 227 workers out
of the 1,538 workers targeted by the management. At 12:30pm on
August 23, labor minister Lee Kee-ho, who has been in charge of
mediating since the NCNP's mediation team withdrew, met with the
union and management separately. He has arbitrated about concrete
issues based on the mediation plan and finally got the agreement.
The agreement includes that the company has to give the 227
dismissed workers consolation bonuses and try its best for
withdrawing lawsuits and punishment of the union. Meanwhile, some
rank-and-file workers who reject the agreement burned flags and
cloths of the 'Sa-su-dai' in front of union offices,
expressing their feeling of emptiness. As of 9:00am on August 24,
union officials are explaining the results of agreement to
representatives.
Unionists In Despair: "We Fought Believing Nobody Should Be
Dismissed"
Rank-and-file workers and their organizations are opposing
the Hyundai Motors Union's decision to accept the mediation plan.
The Struggle Committee of Democratic Workers and Practicing Labor
Group, organizations of rank and file workers, have opposed the
mediation process strongly since the mediation plan was announced
by the mass media and the union accepted them mostly. At 8:00pm
on August 20, about 200 people held a rally in front of the
Hyundai Motors main building where administrative talks were held
between the management and the union. And 'Sa-su-dai' (the guard
against attempts for arrest of the union leadership) held a rally
at the lobby of main building shouting "Dismissals must be
recalled". The Committee of Workers' Families, which has
participated in tent demonstrations for 35 days, are now angry
and are showing their feelings of emptiness. The following are
some opinions in the bulletin of 'Chanumul' (a Korean progressive
user group in a commercial BBS): "The Hyundai workers' struggle
is not only for themselves, but for all workers in Korea...They
should have not compromised!" "Change your mind, leadership of
Hyundai Motors Union! KMWF, KCTU, and People's Victory 21 - what
the hell did you do? Do Hyundai workers really want it? Or do the
10 million workers in Korea really want it? Why did they struggle
day and night for over a month? We have to go on with our
struggle! Resign Hyundai Motors leadership!"
