(en) deliverunion.fau: Conciliation hearings against Deliveroo: Fighting back pays off
Date
Sun, 13 Oct 2019 12:54:59 +0300
The last two of our four members' conciliation hearings against Deliveroo took place
today. The result: fighting back against unfair working conditions pays off - whether in
the workplaces, the streets or in the courts. ---- Deliveroo had previously offered
workers a so-called "goodwill payment" in August after making the entire workforce
redundant with almost no notice. The hearings ended in three settlements, where each of
the three workers received up to seven times the payment originally offered by the
company. However, the company has the right to withdraw these offers within two weeks.
---- The fourth rider rejected the settlement of over € 4,000, as this was far below what
he considers a reasonable severance payment, having faced multiple hardships arising from
his employment conditions. We'll continue to fight for his right to be recognised as a
fully employed worker and not a self-employed contractor. Next, he will have his first
court case to push for his employee status to be recognised by the court. If the case is
won, it could have a positive effect for other "self-employed" workers nationwide.
Outside the court, the FAU held a rally in solidarity with the riders. Here's the speech
from Akseli, an ex-Deliveroo-rider.
