(en) American (anarchist) Jordan MacTaggart Killed Fighting Islamic State in YPG Ranks, Kurdish Question

Date Thu, 1 Sep 2016 12:52:54 +0300

Another international volunteer fighting in the ranks of the People's Protection Units (YPG) has died in the military operation to liberate Manbij. ---- Jordan MacTaggart, nom-de-guerre Ciwan Firat, from Colorado USA, was killed during a mission to save civilians on 3 August 2016, said a statement from the YPG. ---- "Our comrade was a modest and genial person, who was always at the frontline of the fight against terrorists. Martyr Jordan raised the flag of freedom and fraternity of peoples. His struggle and resistance has enriched the Rojava revolution and carved his name into the history of our peoples." ---- The YPG sent their condolences to MacTaggart's family and promised "to realise the fallen fighter's dreams". ---- MacTaggart's family also released a statement saying: ---- "Our son made a clear minded, well researched decision to travel to Syria and join forces with the YPG-A Kurdish militia made up of male and female civilians. All volunteers organized and determined to fight the evil that is ISIS.

Jordan admired the Kurds from afar and grew to love them as a people and eventually his comrades in arms. Their cause became his. Without regret or remorse he was in Syria to do his best to help them. He was welcomed and loved in return. He spoke so highly of them and his fellow foreign fighters from all over the globe.

We love him unconditionally. We support him completely and our sincerest wish is that no one turns a blind eye to this ongoing Kurdish revolution. We support this cause and the selfless men and women in the YPG/YPJ."

The operation to liberate the strategically important city Manbij, which connects the Turkey border and IS' capital Raqqa, is in its 70th day today. At least 90% of the city is reported to have been liberated with clashes continuing in neighbourhoods where IS militants are using civilians as human shields.
