(en) France, Alternative Libertaire AL #231 - No mixing: A tool for emancipation (fr) [machine translation]

Date Fri, 22 Nov 2013 09:27:03 +0200

Non-diversity: two little words that give rise to much debate. Those who are partisan to see very quickly taxed ugly feminist separatists. Yet it is an emancipatory political tool, essential in the process of awareness own feminist struggles. ---- As members of the social category "women", one suffers daily whole bunch of attacks: whistling, sexist thoughts, pubs, hands on buttocks, sexist jokes ... We have also all faced more or less directly to sexual violence, through our employees or relatives lived. To say the violence is to be aware and especially to politicize: these are not mere accidents of individual pathways but social acts, tolerated and encouraged by the patriarchal system. It is with this awareness that we can give a collective response to all political and gender-based violence that we live daily.

More free speech
It is easier to address these issues-sex, especially because the presence of men may lead some to minimize the violence experienced, for fear of sounding accusatory towards their male counterparts. Moreover, when men attend this kind of trade, it is not uncommon that they parasitize the debate by saying that they, they are for gender equality and they have never, ever, sexist behavior. In addition, we know, in mixed areas speech tends to be appropriate by the men, who often feel more legitimate to speak, even subjects that do not concern them directly. Similarly they should be careful not to confiscate voice to women, we must rely on us to feel just as legitimate as they express ourselves in public. For some, this necessitates a first speaking in a non-mixed environment, which is often easier and less scary.

Meet us to discuss feminism, patriarchy, mode of action, etc, this is not so trivial as it may seem. Groups of women who make policy themselves, which self organize, it is still rare, even in politicized environments.

A history of political
Especially if the female-sex is often questioned, the men that often occurs in practice, particularly in several militant groups left, is it not questionable. We reply that this male-sex is not intentional, unlike those of women. This is where the rub: women self exclude some too virilistes political groups where they do not find their place. So even if it is not claimed, the male-sex is created by men who adopt unfavorable attitudes to the integration of women in their groups (sexist jokes, contests of manhood ...). As feminists, we affirm that non-political diversity is an essential tool to build an autonomous feminist struggle and allows us to really overcome patriarchy.

"Single-sex education is excluding and discriminating"
Single-sex education is primarily a between-self rather than exclusionary and discriminatory practice. Men are not discriminated against: they are not excluded because of their sex, but their place in the patriarchal system, namely dominant. This place, even if they do not benefit intentionally brings them still indisputable material benefits, social and political (they are not violated, victimized, excluded, beaten, belittled ... and much more!).

It is therefore primarily to be in a non-joint framework between people oppressed by the same system (patriarchy) in order to provide the tools to fight male domination. In addition, holding caucuses does not preclude discussing these issues also in a mixed environment.
