(en) Chile, FCL statement: On the current international situation (on the occasion of Obama's visit) [ca]

Date Fri, 25 Mar 2011 18:35:49 +0200

We have recently seen this country's entire political class hopping on one foot in anticipation of the visit by Barack Obama, the faithful continuer of Bush's policies and historical representative of the long, shady relationship of domination that has plagued the people of Latin America for more than a century. ---- The visit of this representative of US imperialism comes about in quite a significant context. What was at first thought to be only a symbolic visit has become the menacing possibility of a repeat and enhanced submission of some of our countries to the domination of the USA. Clearly, this need to mark out territory is mainly driven by the relative loss of influence by the world's major power. Today, the hegemony of the USA is increasingly shifting towards military hegemony, since the economic crisis affects it too and it is finding itself threatened by the uncertain future of the global market. But let us not forget that unarguably the USA still has the largest fighting force in the world.

One point that sets the tone of the current situation of imperialism, is the events involving the Arab peoples, who are struggling against dictatorships, for self-determination, in open opposition to US and EU interests. We believe that it is very important to learn from their experiences and we take this opportunity to call for solidarity in a variety of ways with this process.

After decades of open support to dictatorships that these people have had to put up with, the USA frowns on what is happening in those lands. The strength of the Maghreb has gone far beyond the caricature that was popularized by the media and ideological machines of the imperialists and has given a clear signal to the other peoples of the world: we can decide our own destiny, we can overcome. Thus, the current military operation by the great powers is not actually directed against Gaddafi, but against the possibility that the Libyan people continue the revolution, bringing the country out of the control of the capitalists. All this in order to ensure continuity for the miserable interests of oil multinationals in the region.

So while the UN approves and NATO puts into action, the largest military intervention in Libya (since Iraq), Obama is seeking to mark a historical moment with an offensive against the Latin American region, a return to the "Alliance for Progress", implemented 50 years ago as a form of response to the power being accumulated by the social movements and armed movements on our continent. That is why this new pact aims to renew the traditional oppression of the peoples of the darker half of America, with thye clear intent to prevent what has already begun to happen - and continues to happen - to our brothers and sisters on the other side of the globe.

Today, the forces of capital are seeking to give themselves a fresh impetus. We must therefore double our efforts in the struggle against the interests and false promises of capitalism, double our efforts in building a strong, organized social movement that is able to build the capacities of the people so that they can shape their own destiny.

For Socialism and Liberty!
Long live those who struggle!
