Nov 23rd Day of Action in support of education ---- Students across the UK occupied a number of universities as part of the national day of action called by National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts (NCAFC) in support of free education and against privatisation. Bloomsbury Social Centre (UCL/Birkbeck/SOAS)
Students, workers and residents from across Bloomsbury occupied a disused University property. From today [Nov 23rd] 53 Gordon Square will be renamed the Bloomsbury Social Centre. The building has been empty for three years, subject to a legal dispute over its ownership. SOAS management are perhaps ignorant of the context in which 53 Gordon Square was left vacantly to rot. Since 2008, the recession has been steadily worsening. House prices have remained unaffordable, living costs for ordinary people have continued to rise, and desperately needed public space has been made over to Big Retail at fire sale prices.

Birmingham University
Despite constant harassment by the university security throughout the night the occupiers refuse to be intimidated and remain determined to stay in occupation. They say: We have occupied the abandoned former gatehouse of the North Gate of the University of Birmingham. We have done this because despite the university and government taking increasingly regressive measures to make universities inaccessible, we are determined to keep the gates open. We have taken this space as a “free space” on campus, from which we seek to educate ourselves, and all who come into the occupation, to build a stronger movement.

Cambridge University
Students disrupted a Education minister David Willets at Lady Mitchell Hall and then went into occupation. As one student put it:
Those who think that letting the talk go ahead would have influenced the debate on higher education are misguided. We have marched for a year, been kettled repeatedly and threatened with rubber bullets. Willetts has made up his mind; he is not for turning. That is why we shut him down. Ahead of the strikes on November 30th, the present moment calls for more innovative and immediate tactics.
Why we are occupying:
We are here to present an alternative to the government’s White Paper, which we believe constitutes an assault on Higher Education, and to build – in support of millions of striking workers – for November 30. We intend to hold an open, free University of Cambridge and invite anyone to hold talks and workshops in our space.

Goldsmith’s University
Goldsmiths is now occupied in solidarity with the November 30th strike and the global occupation movement. We reject the privatisation and marketisation of life, and the violent transfer of public wealth into private hands. We stand with all those afflicted by this vile agenda and against those who profit from this enforced misery.
P.S. Fuck those cowardly bureaucrats who think they run this university and who consistently refuse to support the staff and students of Goldsmiths. They are not educators.

Warwick University
Around 100 students at the University of Warwick set up 15-20 tents to occupy in front of the Warwick Arts Centre. The demonstration marks a ‘day of action’ called for by the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts (NCAFC), belongs to similar occupations across the UK. Occupation Warwick will be holding public talks on issues relating to the global resistance to financial austerity and the student movement in opposition to tuition fees. The demonstration will build up to a national day of public sector strikes on November 30th.

York University
As part of the NCAFC (National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts) Nov23 day of action we have gone into occupation! The broad aims of the day of action are to promote not for profit education, to encourage universities not to make cuts or convert universities into profit making companies, and to support the public sector strikes on Nov 30th. The aims and values of the occupation are to be defined democratically by the group.

Royal Holloway
Royal Holloway activists have been interrupting UCAS day tours being led by members of College Council, who are planning to make huge department cuts, job losses and has made privatisation agreements with 3 companies including the textbook publishers Pearsons, to make arguments against cuts, fees and privatisation. Students, and workers in the GMB and UCU are also leafletting and talking to people about future events – a discussion on the white paper tomorrow, and a rally and picket line for striking workers on the 30th.”
