(en) Britain, Cambridge Anarchists last word on Strawberry Fair (for now)

Date Mon, 07 Jun 2010 12:27:35 +0300

Cambridge Anarchists reply to the Editorial in The Cambridge News (04.05.10) about the Strawberry Fair protests. Cambridge Anarchists is a anti-state, anti-capitalist group that has existed since the 1970s. It includes people active with the Class War Federation (www.classwar.org) and Earth First! (www.earthfirst.org.uk). We believe in a classless society without hierarchy or exploitation where individual freedom is balanced by social cooperation and solidarity. ---- We share the opinion of the Editorial in The Cambridge News (04.05.10) that it’s a shame the Strawberry Fair will not be going ahead as usual. But we must take issue with the assertion that Cambridge Anarchists have “threatened” to “disrupt” the alternative so-called Happy Fun Day organised by Cinammon Francis-Burnett.

We haven’t threatened to disrupt the fair. The police have and their continued threat of disruption is why Cambridge Anarchists have been calling on people to show up anyway. We
want to see people enjoying the sunshine on the common without threats of
violence from the Cambridgeshire Constabulary.

We have no intentions of “kicking off” (as Cinammon Francis-Burnett is
quoted as saying) for no reason. We, like many others, will be there with
our friends and families. We have seen enough in our days, though, to know
that the police don’t need any excuse for violence against members of the
public they feel are not doing what they want. We have simply been telling
people to be prepared for heavy police intimidation and violence if they
go to Midsummer Common on Saturday (5th June).

Cambridge Anarchists will be there on Saturday with our partners, children
and friends and we hope the police will keep peaceful. We have no desire,
or logistical ability, to orchestrate any kind of sinister scheme to turn
Saturday into “the biggest kick-off in the city’s history” as we have been
quoted as saying before by The Cambridge News (14.05.10) out of context.
We hope to enjoy the sunshine, listen to some tunes, relax and enjoy our
right to free assembly on common land.

We totally support people resisting police violence and intimidation by
whatever means necessary.
