(en) Britain, LONDON, MEDIA, Protesters are gearing up for next week's G20 summit
Date
Sat, 28 Mar 2009 10:16:52 +0300
Some of the usual suspects are participating: anti-war activists, trade unions and
environmentalists. The protests are due to kick off at noon tomorrow with a "Put People
First" march through central London. Participants range from Sudanese Women for Peace to
the British Musicians' Union. More established players, such as Friends of the Earth and
the Trades Union Congress, are pushing an agenda of "jobs, justice and climate." An anti
-globalization group called G20 Meltdown is taking a different approach. Its coordinator
says "marching from A to B solves nothing." Instead, its members plan to distribute fake
paper money, set up a giant monopoly game at the London Stock Exchange and stage a
costumed protest at the Bank of England. There are fears of violence from anarchists, who
are threatening action against unspecified targets.
